Like I mentioned earlier, I got a few more volumes of Fruits Basket (6-9) (163.-166.) and decided to read through them while downloading a couple of things and thawing my freezer. The extremely good thing about Winter is that I can place all the things in my refrigerator and freezer to the balcony while it's powered off and they will stay just as cold, if not even colder than before while staying there :)...
Sniff, the story in Volume 6 about Kyo's "true" form that was so monstrous really made me want to cry. Everybody, even his own mother, always rejected him and from his early childhood he was only vilified and looked upon with suspicion, so it's no wonder that he himself felt that he was monstrous and unloveable.
I like it how Tohru has such a big heart and that even though she is occasionally afraid, she still always thinks of others and their feelings. It was really heart-breaking to see the way Kyo tried to push her away before she, too, could hurt him and reject him. He didn't think she or anybody else could accept his hideous form, but she proved him wrong.
Like Kyo said, when Tohru confessed she was afraid but still willing to accept him, she proved that she saw him - unlike his mother always hid him from the sight of everybody else, and who wouldn't even look at him when he was transformed. It must have only added to Kyo's pain after her death that she was whispered to have committed suicide because she couldn't accept the curse that was on her son...
The father-son relationship that started through Kazuma's wish to atone for the way he and the rest of the family treated his grandfather was also very moving. Both Kazuma and Kyo feared the other would reject him if they ever said anything about the close bond had developed between them, but in the end they acknowledge it and I think it only made both of them happier about themselves.
I forgot to mention it in my previous post, but I think Akito's visit to the school was partly to check out whether Tohru was a threat to her power and when Yuki was still clearly terrified, Akito dismissed Tohru as "ugly" and not worth the trouble. But it's clear that Tohru's kindness is healing the Sohmas who come in contact with her. She is giving them the strength to deal with their weaknesses and hurts, and showing them that they are worthy of love and friendship whatever Akito might tell them.
The hints in Book 9 about Kyo being locked away after his graduation just because he's the Cat just make me more convinced than ever that quite a few people involved with the Zodiac Curse can't see the individuals behind the masks that they have been provided with... The way Kyo's father blames his son for his wife's death and just wants to lock him away is just awful.
Even love between the Zodiacs seems to be troubled, since there is some hint of tragedy between Hatsuharu and Rin, and even when children try to tell adults (Akito, hating them more and more every volume), they just get beaten black and blue for it. All of the Sohmas are so unhappy in the whole, even though Tohru has brought some momentary happiness to some of them. This manga is built in such a way that I just hope it will get a happy ending for the people who deserve it...
