The Illusionist, Tyttö sinä olet tähti and The Prestige

My second film yesterday was The Illusionist, and what a wonderful magic trick it was. The story is about a famous magician and the policeman who is trying to outwit him. There is romance, jealousy, treachery and even murder involved in the story. Very enjoyable even though it was fairly easy to guess where the plot was heading! Still, it was fun to be along for the ride.

Tonight I continued with two more rental movies (at least they got me away from the computer for some hours so that I would really rest my hand... :P) Well, first I watched a Finnish film called Tyttö sinä olet tähti (Girl, You Are a Star), which I enjoyed a lot.

The story tells of a girl from a well-off family who wants to become a singer and a boy from the other side of the tracks who composes music for a hiphop group that has just lost a record contract, because he wants to hold on to his principles when it comes to music. The two meet and initially it seems they have nothing in common, but with time they become much close, but of course there are all kinds of complications.

The movie was hilarious at times (loved the scene at the record company with the two guys babbling while just a few moments before they had talked of a superior attitude - the impovised session in the outtakes was even more hilarious :D), heart-breaking at others and I really liked the actors' (Pamela Tola and Samuli Vauramo) performances in it.

The second film tonight was the other big magician movie from last year, i.e. The Prestige. I read Christopher Priest's novel last Summer, but they have changed the story quite a bit to fit the film form. Some changes work and some don't.

Since I knew what was going on from the beginning and the secrets behind both Rupert Angier's and Alfred Borden's great magic trick, I sort of knew what to expect. I still wonder if that's why I immediately spotted one particular thing or was is deliberately made easier for the movie audiences to guess. I suspect the latter.

Still, this was an extremely engaging movie and Hugh Jackman and Christopher Bale did a wonderful job as two magicians obsessed with each other.
