Excellent dark fantasy!

I just finished reading Moonshine (104.), the second book in Rob Thurman's (robgoodfella, female, btw) urban/dark fantasy series about the Leandros brothers, and now I want to have the next book in this series in my hands immediately! Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, since this book was only just published in March, so it'll probably take at least a year until there is another book available. ARGH! But I want it now!

Someone on the f-list talked about these books a while back (meganbmoore, was it you?), which is why I got them, and I'm very glad I did!

So, the first book, Nightlife (103.) introduces us to the brothers: Nik, who is an extremely proficient fighter and his younger brother Cal whose half-human heritage is the reason why they are running for their lives. Cal is half-human through their mother's side and half "Grendel" through his father's side, and the Grendels have decided that they want him for some nefarious purpose of their own.

The Grendel plot is revealed in the first book and somewhat routed, but there are still aftershocks making difficulties for the brothers and their friends in the second book. I suspect these troubles are going to stay a major factor, since they define Cal's character and Nik's protectiveness so much.

I was reminded of Supernatural a bit with the first book, with the older brother doing his best to take care and protect the younger one - and there are some definite similarities, but the resemblance was gone by the second book and the characters had taken on a life of their own.

The books are written in first person through Cal's, or should I say Caliban's (their mother had a nasty sense of humour while naming him) perspective. This choice brings some very unexpected consequences to the story in Nightlife, where there is an interesting twist in the middle of the story. But it still manages to work extremely well. Excellent job in writing it!

And if it isn't yet evident from these comments, I liked these books a lot! If you like Supernatural, or any other dark fantasy or supernatural fantasy/horror stories, do check these out!
