Nobuta wo Produce & Gokusen

As I've already mentioned elsewhere, I'm currently in the middle of several different doramas (Silence, Meteor Garden, Gokusen), but I couldn't help adding one more to the list :).

Out of curiosity, I ended up watching the first episode of Nobuta wo Produce, and it looked very intriguing. The main story starts when a new girl named Kotani Nobuko (Horikita Maki) comes to the school. She seems very withdrawn and timid and is instantly the object of major bullying by other girls in her class.

Two boys in the class decide to make a project out of her and to make her over as the most popular girl in the school because they are feeling bored wih the normal activities in school. The two boys originally can't stand each other, but I suppose this common project will bring them and Nobuko closer together as the series progresses.

Of the characters, Kiritani Shuji (Kamenashi Kazuya) seems to have some control freak-ish tendencies and appears to be playing some kind of a role at all times.. He met Nobuko before she came to school and was freaked out by her. He is initially reluctant to get involved in the situation, but in the end decides to help Nobuko out.

Kusano Akira (Yamashita Tomohisa), on the other hand, comes across as extremely flaky and weird. He keeps pestering Shuji at school and at times it almost looks like he's drunk all the time. I have to say it was fun to see Yamapi in a completely different role from the one he played in Kurosagi, though at this time his character only comes across as very messed-up.

Nobuko is used to being bullied and almost expects it. It's like her constantly hunched demeanor invites people to be mean to her. She doesn't think things can ever change until Shuji and Akira start to tell her that she has to do something unless she wants to be bullied for the rest of her life.

I can't wait to see how things develop. I suspect this will be my newest addiction now that I've finished My Lovely Sam-Soon :).

I also finished episode 2 of Gokusen yesterday. This series seems like light fun that I can watch whenever I'm in the mood for something like that, but it also isn't anything too addictive so that I can take breaks from watching it as well.

The students are starting to slowly accept Yankumi (the nickname they gave to their teacher) and are starting to trust her word that she will do anything to protect them. There were also valuable lessons on the true nature of friendship when she berated the guys for not going with Minoru when he goes to meet the boys from the other school. It's quite amusing how scary Yankumi can appear at times - she's like a tigress protecting her cubs :). I'm greatly enjoying this series.

I'll do a post on episodes 10-16 of My Lovely Sam-Soon later today, since I finished it last night. I really enjoyed the series, but more on that later.
