X-Men 3

I just came back from seeing the movie and I liked it. It was not as good as the first two, but it was ok. The story was a bit incoherent and I didn't really agree with all their choices. There was, however, a lot of good stuff as well.

The rumours about X4 are already are going around and this story seems to confirm them, but who can tell.

Before going on to the spoiler stuff, I just have to warn everyone not to leave the theatre before the end credits have rolled, since there is a very short, but very interesting scene shown right after them.

I thought I'd title my lj-cut "OMG! They killed...", but then I thought that might be a bit too cruel for my f-list >:).

Random thoughts about the film
- The Jean/Logan makeout session in the lab. Hot!
- The whole Jean/Logan storyline, because I've always been a fan of that ship, since I think Scott Summers is a boring idiot.
- Wolverine. 'Nuff said.
- The Magneto / Professor Xavier interaction in the beginnin of the movie was great, and sooo slashy. :)
- A couple of heart-breaking scenes were really good: 1) the scene where Warren cuts off his wings, and 2) the scene where Magneto et al just abandon Mystique in the car after she's been "cured".
- The Beast was also very well done, though they didn't develop his character that much in this film. I also liked Vinnie Jones's Juggernaut.
- I was glad to see Storm finally got some more air-time, since her character was pretty much ignored in the last film.
- The danger room scenario from the dystopic Sentinel future was great! Hee!
- Some of the deaths and transformations (or cures) were complete surprises to me which is always good. I was also surprised that they killed so many of the major characters. Jean's death was pretty much inevitable as soon as they brought the Dark Phoenix storyline into the picture, but the rest of them - complete surprises. (Like, OMG! Jean killed Xavier! OMG! Mystique lost her powers! OMG! Jean killed Scott!)
- I thought Rogue's going for the cure was completely understandable and fit the character as well, since her power can be such a curse and she is just a teenage who would like to get some kind of a normal life where she can touch other people without fearing that she might kill them. At least she can get some of that before "the cure" is reversed. Though I did constantly expect her to back down at the last moment and to show up for the big fight.
- The brief snippet after the end credits where Prof. X speaks from the mindless guy's body to Moira. Hee!!!
ETA: - The scene where Jean holds back Scott's powers and he can look at her without his glasses was rather sweet, as was the scene where Bobby ices that fountain so that he and Kitty can skate on it.

What I didn't like
- My major complaint is that the story could have been more coherent. The Dark Phoenix & mutant cure storylines weren't properly balanced and occasionally I felt they were trying to cram too much stuff into the c. 1h 45min that the film lasted.
- I wouldn't have recognized Callisto if I hadn't know that that was supposed to be her. Too pretty, for one thing, and wasn't it Caliban, not Callisto, who could sense where other mutants are. The rest of her group were also pretty forgettable cannon fodder.
- After that terrific intro in which he cuts off his wings, they almost completely ignored Angel for the rest of the film.
- Unless she was destroying something or killing someone, Dark Jean looked pretty out of it for most of the film. As I complained above, the story wasn't really developed properly.
- The actress playing Kitty didn't have enough presence for the character, but she was pretty young. She might do better in the next film, if she's still there.
- Nightcrawler wasn't there :(.
- OMG! They killed Xavier!
- The woman playing Moira did not have a real Scottish accent. Actually, her attempt sounded pretty bad to my ear.
ETA: - Oh yeah, taking a piece of the Golden Gate bridge in order to get Alcatraz was just silly and pompous beyond belief. Noo, they couldn't just take a boat, they had move the fricking bridge :/.

After the film, my friend I started speculating on what might be in the X4. Since Xavier is clearly now at Muir island, it's possible they'll go for some version of the Proteus storyline. Other possiblities could the trial of Magneto, Magneto rehabilitated and leading Xavier's school while everyone thinks he's dead, something to do with Genosha, and my favourite, a Hong Kong action movie based on the Kitty Pryde miniseries, where she goes to Japan with Logan and get her ninja skills :).
