No stopping
Standing opposite the double doors leading into the cafeteria Sean nervously looked at his watch. It was 11:21, only one minute later, still nine more to go. He wondered why time always seemed to slow down when you were waiting on something or in his case someone special. Raising his head up from another look at the infernal instrument on his wrist he heard the ding sound of the elevator and spotted Orlando walking out and in his direction with a shy smile.
At Orlando’s soft spoken and bashful “Hello Sean, I hope you didn’t wait too long?” Sean decided that waiting wasn’t so bad after all. Also he noticed glancing down again that it was only 11:22. Orlando was eight minutes early!
Grinning and negating the question Sean nodded his head to the cafeteria. “You ready to go?”
Wanting to be courteous and impress Orlando Sean hurried two steps forward to reach the door first and open it; he forgot how easy the swing doors operated. He blushed slightly at nearly falling into the cafeteria as he held the door for Orlando who hadn’t seemed to notice anything out of order and thanked him with a bright smile before they made their way over to the queue waiting by the counter.
After a short discussion of what to order they changed to other harmless topics and got the obligatory ‘How long do you work here?’ and other work related subjects out of the way as they waited for their turn. Placing their orders and receiving the dishes they looked around for a place to sit. Choosing a small table over by the windows they made their way over.
Setting the tray down and trying to pull a chair out Orlando wrestled with it for a few moments - stupid chairs, they always always hooked legs making it impossible to pull them out without trouble - before taking his seat. He was sure his ears were glowing.
Staring at each other over their lunch both were smiling but quiet, both in awe at sitting here together before Orlando launched into the topic of football and ‘The Blades’ Sean’s favorite team; that should work brilliantly. Sean’s bright smile, excited voice proved it. Yes it payed off to take the longer route to the tray return counter and develop ears like a bat. At the same time Sean noticed that choosing a table close to Orlando before this very lunch was a smart move because the enthusiastic discussion and hand gestures he received on the words movies, dogs and snowboarding could only be a good sign.
They were so immersed into their talking that they nearly forgot the time and finished their lunch half an hour later than they should. Both didn’t care much. After all they had a REAL conversation and a REAL date the day after tomorrow.
