Vid shows/panels brainstorming post

Dec 09, 2010 09:05

Now that registration is open, it’s time to tell us what you want to see as part of the Vidukon schedule/program. This post is for brainstorming ideas about vid shows and panels that you want to see/attend. Everyone is welcome, indeed encouraged, to participate in this discussion. You do not need to have registered yet to participate (but reminder ( Read more... )

My idea: a panel on character study vids, how they can be constructed, different approaches, etc, including viewing of a couple of vids and discussion of them (might be a 1.5 hour thing in order to have discussion as well as some viewing).

We're likely to keep this as a back-up idea as we're really keen to get other people involved first, but I'm posting the idea here to gauge what if any interest there is in it, just in case. :)

I second the character study vids idea, but I think it needs to be coupled with a show as well (like a show and then a panel). Kind of like Race and Representation and Vidding at VVC had a show and then a panel which followed.

I would be happy to work on this with you! I adore character studies.

Yeah, it would definitely need some viewing as well as some discussion. I was actually thinking of getting away a bit from the rigid 'vid show and then panel' format and mixing up vids throughout... but if that's a) too complicated or b) people think it's not a good idea, then I'm open to doing the combo thing too. I'm malleable! Or it's malleable... or something.

It would be great to work with you on something! :D :D We'll see how things go, interest-wise. :)

The problem is one of structure. Mixing it up is something that will require lots of good planning, or else the panel's structure will suffer and lend things to confusion and possible distractions for the audience, rather than helping them focus. In a nutshull: I don't know that it's do-able. In theory, maybe. In practice, not so much ( ... )

Hmm, see, I'm not put off by planning and while I agree it would need to be structured appropriately, I don't think I agree that it's undoable. Not for a small environment like this--though it would be for VVC. We don't have parallel programming so basically everyone at the con would be there (unless they were taking a break). The way I had thought to do the panel was more like using the vids as illustration of different approaches (rather like the way some panelists used snippets from vids to illustrate their points at VVC--but with whole vids instead).

I mean I really respect your opinion and you know more about presenting to an audience than I do so I'll defer to your expertise, but I will have to rethink my ideas a bit to run it as separate elements. I'm not sure how long the show would be either... I hadn't intended to have a full hour's worth of vids, rather more of a panel with a bit of illustration.

Oh, ok, that makes more sense . . . I wasn't thinking of the fact that Vidukon would be much smaller, for some reason, and therefore this would be more doable in this kind of environment. (Sometimes I am slow on the uptake, lol, and need things explained a few times.)

But 'expertise' pffle whatevhs I don't have more expertise than you.

Still happy to help!

It's all good! :) While we'd love it if more people came, I think we have only a dozen registered right now and we're trying to be realists about it. :) One of our goals is to take advantage of the strengths of being a small group and I think that does offer us a little more freedom in terms of the programming. Also, hopefully it will mean that sitting in the one room all day will be more varied for people.

Cool that you'd be happy to help though! Yay! Would you still feel up for that if you also put together an Epic Bromance show, or is that too much? I have some ideas for this panel but bouncing them off someone else and of course getting any recs you might have of suitable vids would be awesome.

I'm happy to bounce ideas and throw vids at you. Character vids are a special soft spot of mine. :)

And yeah, I don't think it will be too much with Epic Bromance.

Given that we're unlikely to end up running multiple concurrent tracks without 40 or so attendees, I really like your idea. I know it might make it more difficult for people who just want to see the vids or who just want to be there for the panel, but it feels to me like an extended, in-depth panel with a lot of visual evidence and examples and a great way of epxloring ideas through multiple vids.

Yeah, an extended indepth panel was what I was thinking.

I really like the idea of discussing the different ways to approach a character vid. That seems like it would be a very interesting panel.

Chiming in to add another Yes! to the character study idea.

I'd be up for this - I think since character study vids are such a stock in vidding it ought to be a panel that includes discussion rather than just watching a bunch, if there's time for that?
