I know everyone is upset that I don't update enough, and I actually left Palmerston North today, so I figured I would update with a coupla photos from the day. I'm not the best photographer, but you'll get the idea.
I went to Kapiti Island, which is a nature reserve that has more native NZ bird species on it than anywhere else in the country. This is because they have gotten rid of pretty much all of the invasive species (3 species of rat, rabbits, deer, goats, pigs, possums, HUMANS) and then they reintroduced some species that had previously been killed off. It's a beautiful place, with lots of birdies struttin' around like they own the place (because they do).
It's a Weka!
Some Kakas!
Looking at the North Island from part of the way up the mountain.
Top o' the mountain. The Cook Strait and South Island in the distance. I was looking online, and someone took the same photo here:
www.answers.com/topic/ng-ti-toa I didn't take this picture, but this is the whole of Kapiti Island. The part on the bottom of the pic is privately owned by cool people who want to preserve it also. I was closer to the middle or the far side of the island, on one of those two little peaks.
From the top, I could see the North and South Islands, Brothers Island, a snow-topped mountain on the South Island, and a few other little islands. It was beeaaauutiful! If you absolutely MUST see more photos, I might indulge you.
