I'm having issues with WMM being unable to recognize files from. . . an older version of WMM. . .
A few weeks ago, I started creating a vid on my four-year-old laptop, using windows movie maker, version 5.1. A few days ago, I tried to import all of my files onto my new desktop, which has WMM 6.0. I transported everything I could think of, making sure that everything was in the same relative location, and hoping for the best. Unfortunately,
The files seemed to import fine-except they won't play in the preview window. I can click on a certain part of my project and the correct frame will show up, but nothing happens when I press preview/play. The imported source files do the same thing. I can add, split, and even save and export the projects, I just can't play them.
The files were compressed using a DIVX codec in Virtualdub (both of which I've installed onto my new computer). They play with an error message in windows media player-if I ignore the error pop up window the files seem to play fine. The movies I've exported from windows movie maker don't play at all. There's no specification as to why the exported files don't play-there was just 'a problem'.
Any ideas on what might have gone wrong? My guess is that I'm missing a codec somewhere, but I honestly can't think of anything that I haven't already installed. Also, how difficult would it be to move windows movie maker onto the new (vista) system without any CD's? I wouldn't mind using the old software-but I'd like to have the processing power of my new computer.
Thanks for any help. . .
