A very recent pastime I do only on weekends is play with this computer game "Miss Management". It's a role-playing game, simulating a work environment, wherein I play the supervisor of an office and I have to delegate tasks to various people. Of course there are different kinds of tasks and so I have to make sure I give proper assignments so that the work is done efficiently and employees do not get too stressed out if I assign them a task that isn't in their skill category. From time to to time, I have to relieve their stress by giving them doughnuts and cinnabuns. Some employees have quirks, like they have to go to the bathroom every so often, another one relaxes by microwaving beef stroganoff and some smoke.
I enjoyed playing it particularly because it's a relief to be able to know exactly what ticks people off, what makes them work more efficiently, etc. Sometimes, I, the supervisor, get stressed out and when that happens, I have to eat a brownie (or three) or else I'll be absent for the day. But even when that happens, I get the chance to re-do the whole day. A new chance at making the day successful in terms of accomplishing the goals of all employees and my own.
What this game really tells me is that different people have likes, dislikes and quirks that we have to deal with in a work environment. I wish things were just as transparent in real life. If only each person had a file containing details regarding their personality and there was a bar, a gauge that would turn red whenever people are stressed out, then one would know exactly what to do and exactly when to give a doughnut. If it were only as simple as giving somebody a doughnut.
If I had a gauge at the top of my head, I'm certain it would have gotten very red this morning. And perhaps somebody might've given me a doughnut to increase my wellbeing. But, alas, such was not the case.
And so I went home at lunchtime, drained. I took my lunch, then proceeded to play the game wherein I'M IN CONTROL, wherein if I fail, I can always repeat the same day twice, thrice, or as many times as I need to accomplish all the tasks and achieve all the goals.
Good luck when reality seeps in.
