The complex expression on Starbuck’s face here just speaks volumes about what this vid is trying to say: fear, awe, and most importantly, hope.
So true! That shot really does sum up the vid for me. And I was amazed at how Buffyann was able to make that image work for me personally as I kind of hated it in canon! But it works here the way I think it was supposed to work, ideally, in the show. But I do think this vid is a good example of a vidder lifting all the best aspects of one emotional thread (the hope of human survival despite the odds) out of a problematic and, as you point out, bogged down canon. It's at once true to the source and more powerful than it in its purity. Which is one of the greatest things that vids can achieve, imho.
