I am also thrilled you went with the clip of Fraser putting on the hat for the duty-section. For many many reasons it brings me great joy but the hat, man. The hat signifies things.
I like the hat clip too; you are so right about the hat signifying things about duty! I just wish the clip quality weren't quite so dreadful.
And, okay, I was thinking about that part in your commentary, for the "out here it's so silent" part, where you say "in the silence, Fraser just might figure something out" -- and, you know, I didn't do this consciously, but in that section, there is NO TALKING. It's like Ray's figured out that *talking* to Fraser doesn't work -- he'll put on his listening face and everything, but talking to Fraser just makes him start thinking, and then he OVER-thinks, and... it just never ends well. But when they quit talking, they can finally start communicating. When Ray just LOOKS at him, just sits there with him and waits, Fraser finally starts to get it: in that silence he can hear his heart talking, and it's saying something about Ray, and finally, finally he knows which way to go.
Ahahahaha. I have way too much fun talking about my own vids, as my many far-too-long vid commentaries over the years attest.
And oh, due South and its extra-strong gravitational pull, sucking in fangirls more than a decade after the end of its run. Glad this commentary was timely. ;)
My tendency to talk about my own vids at length is indeed terrifying, or possibly just ridiculous. Hee. But I'm so glad you found it cool as well! And I do hope you've seen/heard sisabet's commentary on the vid, which is more insightful and less whiny than mine, and also much funnier.
Heh. I meant the amazing amount of thought and care and structure you put into your vids is terrifying. I'm still very much at the "this clip fits with the music and lyrics and looks pretty" stage of vidding, and baffled by the whole idea of creating contrasts and a through-line. Every time I try to do something like that, I get thoroughly stuck. So it's incredibly useful to see how you approached it and figured it out, and also a little "OMG I don't have enough braaain for this!"
Well, I am certainly the queen of overthinking things. Heh. For what it's worth, all my vids start out (and usually spend a loooong time) in exactly the stage you describe; I usually don't start to figure out the throughline until I've filled 3/4 of the timeline (or, um, finished it completely and sent it out for beta), and then I have to go back and change stuff to reflect what I've figured out
