Title: Maybe
Disclaimer: I am not associated with these individuals. This is 100% fiction. I am not making any money off of this. The end.
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Craig Stammen, John Lannan
Note: The prompt was PDA. That...obviously didn't happen.

It's 2009, they shouldn't have to pretend in public. But they would hide it anyway. They're the quiet type, seen by most as pleasantly boring.

Both were drafted in 2005. John went in the eleventh round, Craig in the twelfth. When Craig first saw John, he was on the rookie field, looking lost. Craig was drawn to him instantly; a shy kid, rarely drawn to anyone.

"So, I don't have a roommate," Craig told him in greeting. "How 'bout you?"

John relaxed. "Not yet. You looking?"

"Might be if you are."

John smiled. "Maybe."

Things progressed from there, friends going through the ranks together. Behind the scenes too - pauses, cleared throats, and a couple of failed girlfriends.

Then, there was one night when things just sort of happened. There was no alcohol. No excuses. Craig looked at John and realized he wanted things that he shouldn't want from a guy. John looked back, surprised, because he wanted the same things but never intended to ask.

Just like that, John was up to the big leagues. He figured it out and was there to stay. Craig joined him soon enough; 2009, his opportunity.

2009, they're in John's one-man apartment. It was two-man before the Pittsburgh trade. There's a hand-scrawled "For Sale" sign on what was once Joel's door.

It's been a long time, long enough that John hesitates.

"What, not good enough?"

John smirks. "Shut up."

He pulls off Craig's shirt. Mouths together, Craig itches to return the favor.

They fumble through it, clumsy kids reacquainted after putting other things first. Baseball, learning, shaving cream.

And - of course - being the worst team in the majors.

"Thought we'd get over this," Craig admits. He backs John into a wall.

"Disappointed?" John asks.

"Nah. You?"

John smiles a bit. "Maybe."
