2 minutes' allegory.
The west continent is Hellas/Europa. Galbadia proper is Laconia or maybe Mycenae/Achaea. Dollet is Athens. Timber is a mix of Corinth and Messenia.
Balamb island is Naxos (or maybe Crete).
The east continent is Asia Minor. Esthar is Lydia or even Syria/Palestinia, considering the salt lake. The mountain range bordering it on the north is the Caucasus. Trabia is Scythia, if it's anywhere.
The south continent is Crete or Egypt, but I like Crete better for all the matriarchal imagery and the distant memory of a grand civilization, a great natural (or Atlantean or both) cataclysm, and all the rest of the inhabited world host to it's advanced exiles.
Even though it's on the wrong side, upon reflection, Cyprus can only be the Island Closest to Hell.
For no particular reason, FH becomes Lesbos.
