Part of the reason she bought it was because the whole idea seemed ridiculous. Did people actually buy these things? Of course they did. Only most of those people lived in California, not Boston. "That scooter of yours must be speedy," Alan said, having paused, surprised, in the doorway for a moment. "I didn't expect you for at least another ten minutes."

Then, since this was a visit from a friend whose company he hadn't had the pleasure of in some time, he smiled broadly. "It's wonderful to see you. Is that scotch?"

She ignored the jab at her ride and returned the smile. "I asked myself, 'If I were Alan Shore what would like as a gift?' And fancy scotch was it. Although I bet you would have liked a remote control car too." She offered him the football helmet. "Where would you like to eat?"

"Wherever you like," he said, placing a hand on either side of the helmet and proceeding to inspect its interior for sweat, blood, or any other unsavory residue. "I'm very accomodating."
