She'd really debated calling Ray. He wasn't exactly her favorite person in the world, all things considered. But she still cared about him and couldn't see leaving without at least talking to him first. Of course, Alan was also in the hospital now and felt he should probably be informed. She'd already called everyone else ( Read more... )

Ray was stunned into silence for a moment, then stood from his desk, waving his hand at Welsh and taking the phone with him out of the bullpen.

"Hey," he said as he stepped into the quiet hallway. There were fewer people here and it would be easier to talk.

She smiled and decided not to spring the fact that Alan was ill on him instantly. "How have you been?"

There was no point in lying to her, he knew that. She'd be able to tell right through the phone line, so he ducked into a stairwell and leaned against the wall before saying, "Good. I been good. How're you?"

"I've been better but I'm all right." She paused and didn't really know where to go from there. "Alan's in the hospital."

Ray frowned, switching his phone to the other ear and digging in his pocket for a pencil and paper. Something to write down information. "What? Where? Uh... in Boston, yeah? What happened?"

"He's really sick and uh, he's got a great doctor. He's not really awake or anything." She was almost stuttering, no matter how many times she said it she still felt like she was talking about some TV show, not her friend. "I found him and called 911 and he's been in the hospital ever since."

"Jesus," he said quietly. "Do they know what he has? I mean... what it is? Is he gonna be okay? Not really awake, does that mean like... coma? Or... shit, sorry. Sorry. I'm askin' too many questions at once. Sorry."

"No. It's all right. He's not getting any worse, so far, but they don't know what he has or how he got it. He wakes up, but not for long. I think it's because of the medication they gave him. He's been having really high fevers." Her voice caught for a moment. She really hadn't talked to anyone she felt close to since Alan got sick. "He was coughing up blood when I found him, Ray.."

"Jesus," he said again, then let his head fall back against the wall behind him. "I'm sorry. That must've been... awful."

"Yeah. It was. It still is. I'm sorry I didn't call sooner."

"Hey, no, it's okay. I, uh... I get it." And he did get it, nodding slowly, his head thumping against the wall each time he did. "Does he, um... does he know people when they come to see him?"

She heard his head. "What are you doing?" Before he could answer she continued. "Yeah. If he's awake... he's fully aware. He hallucinates though. Be prepared though. He looks a lot different lying in a hospital bed with a oxygen mask on."

"Huh? Oh... my head," he said vaguely, then nodded again without thinking. "I... would it be okay if I came to see him? I mean... jeez. I know he probably doesn't wanna see me, but, y'know." He shrugged because he really didn't know, so he had no idea why he expected Victoria to know.

"I don't know. I mean.." She didn't want to get into it because it seemed petty and ill timed. "If you care about him as a friend, come see him. Who cares what he wants. He needs friends." Speaking of which. "How is Fraser?"

"I'll come, then." He froze at the mention of Fraser and stopped thumping his head against the wall. "He's, um... good. Yeah, he's good. Thanks for askin'."

She smirked. "I'm glad. And I was also calling to sort of let you know I'm probably going to be moving. In case you'd want to know."
