So I've begun playing in Second Life, a virtual world with a vast freedom for you to be creative; build things, script them, modify your own appearance, buy and sell, hang out and play, explore and chat. I can't say FM has done much for me as a social investment, though - you meet the same assholes on-line as you would in RL. And if you're socially clumsy (which is not to say I am ;) virtual interaction doesn't change much. I've had some nice benefits from joining FM, but nothing to shout about, or couldn't have gained elsewhere.
Social inhibitions... Did I mention that I was a Cyber Virgin? ;) I've been propositioned for on-line sex more than once, but never accepted. Mostly because I feel that whatever you do in cyberspace is karmically significant, no less than your actions in RL, or over the phone; these are real individuals you deal with, after all, and not some simulated monster from "Halo" or "Doom" you can kill with impunity!

As for social inhibitions, I meant that SL makes it easy to initiate contact with new people. You just walk up to them and begin talking...much like in real life. I almost never do that in real life though, but I think that by getting some experience in the "safe" environment of SL, the threshold of doing that in Real Life will be lower. It would be a nice side-effect.
As for on-line sex, I wouldn't have anything against that, just as I wouldn't have anything against it in Real Life. :-)
