New Year Second Day Noonday Je Ne Sais Quoi

Jan 02, 2008 14:41

I walked out to lunch into the bright and cold January noon, and was startled to find snowflakes. It was not a flurry, as flurries have mass. These microscopic flakes were closer to a winter hallucination than fact. Even so, it was pleasant to feel the wind blowing them on my face, to catch a glimpse of white as it flew past my head. North Carolina is not a snowy state, and has been less snowy these last few years. But I smiled, and enjoyed the smell of snow and winter.

And now, after lunch, I am amused. I just finished checking the order on the journal Death Studies, a darker title than Meat Goat Monthly, but similarly jarring enough to provoke a laugh. I imagine a room, two men in lab coats, carrying clipboards, watching a faceless corpse, making marks on a chart.

"Still dead?" "Ye-- Wait! Oh. Yeah. Still dead." "Huh."
