Did anyone else watch Death Comes To Pemberley, the BBC adaptation of PD James's book?
I must say I was very disappointed in it, particularly in the characterizations. Especially in Elizabeth ad Colonel Fitzwilliam. They bore almost no resemblance from themselves in Pride ad Prejudice.
Lizzie was so dull right down to her wardrobe. The parlor maids had nicer dresses than she wore. Elizabeth had never been as frivolous as Lydia and Kitty, but she certainly liked to wear pretty, stylish things. She also is smart enough to know that a Mrs. Darcy she needs to present a certain image. Not that she has to be as ostentatious as Miss Bingley, but she does have a certain standard to meet in society.
And poor Colonel Fitzwilliam, what happened to the genial man in P&P? Sure he's been to war, but did that make him into such an arrogant ass? His treatmen of Georgiana was especially appalling.
The murder mystery was also quite ho-hum. I would have been more interesting if Wickham had been killed. There would have been a to of potential suspects.
Was the book as bad or was it just a poor adaptation?
