The Perils of Being a Responsible Adult

Aug 01, 2010 07:35

After the unpleasantness in the Nexus, Jareth had made a very pretty apology that was as sincere as he could manage, if somewhat lacking in insight. Ali had accepted, of course, after explaining the difference between what he perceived as the problem and what had actually upset her; Jareth's efforts to understand had even won him an extremely limited increase in acceptable behavior regarding the children, and the attendant responsibilities. And then they had kissed and made up, in the traditional fashion.

But while Jareth slept in what Ali was sure was a sense of triumph and self congratulations, Ali lay awake that night, unable to relax. When it was certain she'd never be able to rest, she dressed and went to prowl the corridors and paths of the Labyrinth, hoping to either ease her worries or exhaust herself. She didn't mind the company that found her, although the Raven King's advice proved difficult to accept that night, even certain as she was that everything he said was true. Responsibility, he reminded her, was not something to be given lightly.

Ali knew it was time to return to the castle when every path was turned to lead her there. She had responsibilities.
