Such a hot day this year for the celebration. I'm glad the bonfire was last night and not tonight, when it was cooler, and after beating the bounds this morning I am in no mood (or fit shape) to be out late tonight anyway. Still and all, everyone seemed to have fun; the dancing was lively, the contests remained good-natured, and the Maypole ended up a complete mess but nobody seemed to care. I really do think that next year we should do that before people start drinking, no matter what the satyrs say.

I feel as if I shall sleep a hundred years tonight, and awake quite a different woman.
