At some later point, when Hans has returned and put out cream (of which Alfdis has partaken), the darkest kitty in the house nudges Ali's cheek with some urgency, a plaintive tone in her mental voice.
There is one very sure way to wake a mother up, and it's those words in that tone. Ali's awake and mostly aware almost immediately, curling an arm around Alfdis and scritching between her ears.
"Aww, what's wrong? Did you eat the wrong flowers again?"
Hans put out a dish of creeeeam, she explains, curling up in a little ball of feline misery, the perfect recipient for all manner of loves and attentions.
Despite an chill running down his spine and the general feeling that now would be a really good time to go visit the castle, Hans instead makes his way to Ali's side.
Ali leans down to nuzzle the top of Alfdis' head until her sounds of misery abate.
"You gave her cream," she accuses, when she lifts her head again. "What in the world possessed you to do that? Don't you know what cream does to cats?"
Poor Alfdis! How she suffers, and it's all Hans' fault as far as Ali's concerned.
"Of course they do! People like booze and drugs and books about sparkling vampires, too, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to give them those things! Now look at her! She's going to be sick all night, and you'll be cleaning up after her."
"We were asked to take care of Alfdis and Davyn by a goddess, Hans," she explains when Alfdis is out of sight. It lets her go back to glaring at him. "It's a very important responsibility."
Aliii? I don't feel good...

"I... thought cats liked cream," he tries.

"I am sorry," he says. "I had no idea."

"You should be. Now come and pet her and tell her you're sorry and that you love her very much."

Still... there is no use in provoking an argument. Even if he does feel damn foolish apologizing to a cat.
He comes over to pet Alfdis. "I am sorry, Alfdis," he says. "I love you very much and did not mean to bring this about."

And, so saying, she rises and makes her way to her litterbox as swiftly as her discomfort will allow.
