Rollercoaster Days: Food

Mar 01, 2009 18:36

Ali has been hard at work this afternoon, and the kitchen shows the signs: smudges of flour can be found on almost every surface, racks bearing cookies and candies and cupcakes are stacked as high as possible, the intermittent whirs and beeps of mixers and timers make a sort of music, and there's a distinctly yeasty smell in the air. Well, yeasty ( Read more... )

Hans is quite brave. He is also quite foolish. He is a very capable, clever man. But at times, he can also be quite stupid. This may well prove to be one of those times, as the strange smells draw his curiosity.

The sight of the kitchen is enough to make him pause. There is a chaos here he could not even have imagined. And more baking than he would have thought humanly possible.

But... "Ice cream and pickles, my love?" he asks.

"Mmm-hmm." Hey, it's hard to be articulate around a mouthful of food.

"I love it. It's supposed to go on top of the cupcakes, but I just couldn't wait. Would you like some?" Because there's plenty more where that came from...

And the worst part? She's entirely sincere.

Hans fights very hard to keep a straight face and, fortunately for him, he wins the battle. For the moment.

"Ah, no, thank-you," he replies. He looks around the room. "You have been busy," he adds.

"Oh...okay." More for her!

"Yeah, I got hungry. Would you like some toffee?" It looks like perfectly normal toffee...if you ignore the red bits in. Maybe it's fruit?

Tact, tact remember tact...

Hans examines the toffee and gives in to hope. "That sounds lovely, thank-you."

Ali smiles. How could anything that makes her so happy be bad?

Oh. Right. Pickles and ice cream. On cupcakes. She's busy "frosting" while she waits for him to eat the toffee.

Possibly a little afraid for his life, Hans takes a bite of the toffee, carefully keeping an eye open for another other kitchen strangeness.

Well, it's not like she's spit-roasting the cats or anything. And some otherwise normal people quite like bacon in candy. Who knows? He might think there's something to this new candy-making kookiness of hers.

"So? What do you think?"

Hans chews. And chews. And chews. And eventually swallows.

"It is... different," he says.

"Good different," she presses, "or bad different?"

Hopeful Ali is hopeful! Maybe he'd be better off trying to cookies? At least they're normal.

"Good different," Hans says, quickly, suspecting that it is by far the better answer at this point in time.

"How long have you been at this? I did not know one person could bake so much so quickly."

Well, it's a good answer in one way: she's not crying. But it's a very bad answer in another: she's giving him more.

"Um...a couple hours maybe? The goslings helped with the cookies, but they got bored part way through the toffee." Read: they didn't like the idea of bacon in candy so they ran away before they had to eat any, leaving her unsupervised (which explains the cupcakes).

Hans stomach is going to be very cross with him later tonight. But so long as he does not upset Ali, it is probably worth it. He even manages to put a smile on his face as he downs more of the stuff.

"Quite remarkable then," he says. He looks over the cookies and decides they seem safe. "The cookies look quite good."

"Oh! Would you like some? They're spicy. I think you'll like them."

He's got to hate that phrase now.

He does. Oh, how he does. But he cannot say that, oh no. That would likely make Ali cry and this he could not do.

"Well, I see no harm in having one," he says, before picking one up and taking a bite out of it.

Oh, it would definitely make her cry. But this time, she might be right! It's a perfectly normal cookie, figgy and with honey and yummy spices. No hidden meat products of any kind.

"I hope they've cooled enough? They're sometimes a bit sticky right out of the oven."
