Ali was determined that Sasha's birthday this year be perfect. Not that she wouldn't usually be so determined, but this year was especially important since last year had been so well ruined. Fortunately, she had an excellent co-conspirator in Sasha's new gentleman friend. The children had their hands in the planning as well, but as they were too young to really keep secrets from Sasha, Ali couldn't rely on them for the surprise aspects of the day.
The celebrations started when Sasha woke, with myriad little gifts the goslings had made for her. They were like all such gifts made by loving children: colorful, covered in glitter, and impractical. Their further gift to their mother was to make sure she had all her favorite breakfast things to eat without saying "ewww!" or making a face once; a test of endurance eased by the bounty of sugary cereals they aren't usually allowed.
With the goslings then off to school, Sasha was given a quiet morning where she could do whatever she wanted...so long as she was home on time
to get ready to go out to
lunch with Dennis. After lunch was
tea with her friends and all the appropriate
vintage accessories, and Ali's quiet removal of herself and Alured from the house so none of the guests would be uncomfortable.
And then, as if she hadn't been celebrated enough yet, dinner was a "proper" birthday party, with silly hats, black balloons and birthday cake. And of course a pile of presents in the corner, waiting their turn...
