Sasha offers Ali a soothing embrace. "After all he has done, you have every right to be angry with the captain, my love. It would not be wrong to leave him to his own devices, until and unless he properly appreciates you."

Moving to a happier topic, she muses, "I imagine the children might like that marmalade, with breakfast or tea."

Ali curls up in Sasha's arms, sighing tiredly. "I think we both know he's incapable of that."

But there are happier topics. "I think I'll make some tomorrow. It'll be a good home ec lesson for the goslings."

"They do enjoy home economics," Sasha agrees, her warmer hand stroking Ali's back.

"Sometimes. They still won't try oysters or squid." Ali stretches with a sigh, then rubs the back of her neck. "But they do want to try crawfish now that they've seen Alton eating them, so that's progress. Would it be spoiling to bring them to New Orleans just for the food they want to try?"

"We'll have to take Sel, then. She can teach them about jazz, I can teach them about food, you can teach them about French and the history of the city..." She smiles, thinking. "When should we go?"

"That depends," her pale lady replies. "Would you prefer to wait for the school's next extended vacation, so they don't miss any math classes, or shall we make the visit as soon as we can make all the arrangements? For my part, I believe they are all doing well enough that a day or two's absence will make little mark on their grades."

"They don't get a day off until October, and I'm not sure a few days would be long enough. I mean, it seems a shame to go all that way and practically turn right around again, don't you think?"
