out and about

in seattle. staying with cousin and her family. her little children are sickeningly cute.

the more time that i spend on the west coast, the more i realize that i'm going to spend some portion of my life living out here. it doesn't have to be any particular time, but i just feel like its such a wonderful place whenever i'm in seattle or the bay area. i mean, hills and mountains are everywhere- you can see the olympics from my cousin's back yard, and you can see mt. ranier from downtown seattle.

the other day we went to seattle's modern art museum, and i fundamentally do not get it. this is not big new, as i don't get most art, but i don't get this to an even greater degree. i cannot appreciate art much beyond looking at it and going "ooooo.... pretty!". i think that this is why i like certain landscape photography (ansel adams, bradford washburn) and impressionists (i really like renoir)- because i can just spend a lot of time looking at them and admiring them just because they are pretty. with a lot of other art, which i don't find as pretty, i can at least see how people would find it pretty or would find some deep meaning in it. but a lot of modern art just makes no sense to me. i dont think that square canvases painted only a single color are pretty, i think that they art boring, and i don't get the point. not only that, i don't see how there could possibly be a point. i know that there is also good modern art out there (the decordova seems to have cool stuff), and after a while the good stuff will hopefully be remembered while that bad will be forgotten, but still, i wonder why any museum would pay to buy some of the stuff.
