The Voyage of the Space Beagle
by A. E. van Vogt
A classic science fiction about voyagers in deep space. The main character is Grosvenor, a Nexialist, which is a scientist that that looks at the scope of information as a whole and draws conclusions instead of looking at the individual pieces.
The ship has four encounters with alien life forms, all but one are purposefully hostile. How the scientists and military on the ship deal with the individual encounters is interesting and well thought out. The science is interesting and as the chapters continue, Grosvenor grows in strength and character.
The four encounters were originally four short stories that were compiled together for the book. It has that feel, but it is not jarring and gives the impression the voyage is really long.
