The Veiled Worlds series
1. Debris
2. Suited
by Jo Anderton
The story of Tanyana, an architect who once worked with pions (the stuff buildings are created with), to her descent into the underworld of being a debris(remains/opposite of pions) collector and her relationship with the sinister beings she and others call the Puppet Men. All throughout the story, the Keeper, who keeps the world safe by closing doors to the Veil, is an intermittent companion to Tanyana.
A good read, but while labelled as a science fiction, gives more of a feel of a fantasy series. There should be at least one more novel after Suited, since the story has not ended.
Kindred
by Octavia Butler
The story of a black woman, Dana, and her travels back in time to save a plantation owner's son, Rufus. Some of the time her husband, Kevin, a white man, travels back in time with her. Each time she returns, Rufus is in mortal danger and Dana saves him. To get back, she has to be in mortal fear for her life. It covers slavery in a way that history books don't convey very well. History books give facts, figures, tell what was done.. but in this novel, Ms. Butler shows how insidious and overwhelmingly awful it truly was. She shows how easy it is to have it ingrained, how hard it is to change thought processes and ingrained actions - on both the side of the slaves and the side of the owners.
