Recently I started reading and viewing information about the artist Henry Darger.
He was unknown as an artist until he was dying and the full scoop of his work unknown until after his death.
In the Realms of the Unreal : The Mystery of Henry Darger
a film by Jessica Yu
c2004
This is a very good documentary about the life of Henry Darger and the processes behind his artwork and his huge 15,000+ page novel. I found it fascinating how obsessed with his artwork he was and how detailed. It made me think that working on my own ideas is not a pipe dream if you are doing it for yourself.
Henry Darger
by Klaus Biesenbach
c2009, Prestel
This book has a multitude of full plates of Henry Darger's artwork. While it goes into some of Darger's history, it mostly seems to cover how Darger's artwork has affected other artists and their ideas/work.
Continuing on the art theme, took out a few books on calligraphy which I will note here for future reference:
All About Techniques in Calligraphy : An Indispensable Manual for Artists and Hobbyists
c2010, Barrons (originally published in Spanish as Todo sobre la caligrafia)
Nice layout, good information about technique and styles. The book goes into the history of calligraphy and the various languages that use calligraphy. It has a lot of examples and ideas for using calligraphy.
Calligraphy Bible : A Complete guide to More Than 100 Essential Projects and Techniques
by Maryanne Grebenstein
c2012, Quantum Publishing
This gives a good overview of the basics of calligraphy, from the materials needed, to how to set up your workspace, to learning and practicing the different types of alphabets. Much of the artwork shown as examples is reprinted in multiple places in the book.
It is a compilation of 4 other books c1993, 1994, 2005, 2007 and I am not sure how much is new material. That said, it is a very detailed and good book on calligraphy.
