GDI, I can't stop.

I'm honestly curious.

Why isn't there an anon meme where people can have anonymous discussion about the show, genres of fanfic, personal kinks and what-have-you, but where there's a lack of attacks on fans?

No, really. I keep hearing complaints that people like the anon meme - except for when people are assholes. So why isn't there an option for ( Read more... )

1) Pure laziness and the expectation that someone else will take care of it.

2) The daunting task of modding such a comm. The fewer the rules of discourse, the easier it is to mod. I think it would take a couple of mods, not just one.

I'd enjoy a pure discussion meme, though.

Yeah, it probably would take a lot of work, and you'd have to find mods who would agree on where the boundaries are. Like - would you allow recs, or disallow them out of fear of seeing the recced fics get torn into? Would you just ban screen names entirely?

I would totally be ALL ABOUT IT. Hell, I don't even care if the discussion gets wanky when disagreeing anons go head to head - just don't start pulling people's screen names into it.

But yeah, I'm pondering this.

I've modded anon memes with strict codes of conduct. It's absolutely possible to build a healthy anon comm without bashing. The trick, as with any meme, is drawing in posters and keeping their interest.

I don't have time for this kind of thing, but if I did, I'd make a simple set of rules:

1) No bashing.
2) No spreading hate of the kyriarchical variety.
3) No re-posting or alluding to flocked content.
4) No outing of other fans.

I'd keep the rules as stripped down as possible, so as not to curtail potential discussions. Keep the rules on the level of a code of conduct, and stay away from things that smack of censorship. I'm not sure how productive things would be if SNs were banned, for example. Eventually we'd need to anchor discussion of say tropes, in particular examples. And if something big came up, a panfandom controversy, there's no harm in talking about that and naming names.

I like this idea. But I also think that it would be hard to mod.

Also, I think that more people than will admit read for the wank, too. :/

who_anon has rules like that. They have a history of being...unevenly enforced. But they are there. It does take a dedicated team of mods though and they have to have the conviction to stamp out everything that doesn't fly.

Um, actually that would be brilliant.

I have no idea what the anon meme started as (as a place for gossip about each other, or talking about the show, or both?), but since this is what so many people seem to value about it, it only makes sense there should be a forum like that.

Because anonymity will always give people the feeling that it's okay to bitch and be an asshole.
They may start OUT with good intentions, but the power seeps into their brain and turns them into megatwats.
*shrug*
It's a common effect of anonymity.
Which is why I avoid it.
