Chill, people.

I'm not saying that we don't have reason to panic, but I just don't think we need to be shouting "the end is near; repent, repent!" from the hilltops. Not yet, anyway.

As I have stated again and again, LJ is a business. Or at least it's trying to run itself as a business. Layoffs happen in a business. I've seen this happen twice with two different companies. I've been seeing it happen all around me. (Hello. I live in Cleveland.)

Layoffs do not mean a company is going under. I have no statistics, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that a great majority of the time it means that the company is doing what it can to make sure that there's no danger of them going under. Cutting back can actually be a good thing in the long run of a company.

I'll be honest: I really don't know what the state of LJ's finances are. They've made some bad decisions, (although ValleyWag is pointing fingers at Harry Potter fans, saying it's fandom's fault for driving away the advertisers) and the economy also sucks. However, I'm pretty damn confident that LJ is not going anywhere anytime soon. And guess what: LJ will get sold before it ever gets taken off the 'net. (Not necessarily a good thing, but it'll still be here.)

The people who are losing their jobs this week are really getting the short stick - no warning, no severance package. Trust me, this sucks way more for them than us.

the end is so fucking nigh, lj alert, i can't see you from my soap box
