Fic: Night Watch, 1/1

So, uh, the muses revolted last night and sent me off on a tangent.  Promise to get back to Staring at the Sun soon.  In the meantime, this little pre-series thingy popped out.

rated PG-13ish for content.

This was lovely, very moving. We've seen Sonny skate very close to the edge before but not to this extent - he always seems to be the guy comforting the other guy - and I'd have liked to have seen something like this in the series. It offers good insight into just what Caroline might have had to put up with.

Favourite line:
Billy wailed, a high-pitched whine that meant he was hungry, and she had time to wonder who would feed him with both his parents dead.
I can't explain quite why I like that. Maybe because it seems so surreal, emphasises the quiet loneliness of the night and the slight sense of absurdity.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I did push the envelope a little with Sonny, it was going to be more low key but somehow the characters took over and went a bit more melodramatic than I had intended. There was so much emotion in his confrontation of Scotty in the pilot, I think that's what was in the back of my mind.

and yes, those absurd thoughts we have in the midst of crisis are endlessly fascinating to me. I've had them myself. Not while faced with a gun, of course, but hey.

i just read this story of yours, i didn't know it existed. It is so good. Did you ever see CEASE FIRE? I actually bought it on VHS, when videotapes cost $50 and came in hard cases. This factoid makes me feel old, but I was in 9th grade and remember begging my dad for it. Anyways, i don't think it ever came out on DVD, and it wasn't the greatest movie, Don J has a few scenes in there are really heartbreaking. And your story reminded me of it.

I did see Cease Fire. I can't remember if I saw it before or after I wrote this story, but I know it has influenced my conception fo Crockett as a character. It wasn't that bad, though as I said somewhere else, it totally fell into "after-school special" mode towards the end. YEah, DJ was quite good in it despite the occasional cheese.
