THE CURRENT CAN CHANGE ON A DIME

BY SUE MCNIECE

Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the characters. Anthony Yerkovich created Miami Vice and Michael Mann was Executive producer, I thank them for that. This is just a fan fiction from my warped mind.

PART FIVE

The sun sunk down and the moon rose to take over, allowing a glow to shine off the water by the time the party was in full swing. A string of party lights danced around the deck, along the sides and onto the bow. Below, you could also see the cabin all lit up. Music bounced around the marina, swinging back to The Sanity Maintenance, where it came from. People were talking, laughing, eating, drinking and dancing to the beat of sound. A few crashers from the marina joined party when they followed the music and loud laughter to the boat.

Sonny, being the host made his rounds to talk to people. He stopped to look toward the railing. What he saw was Julie standing alone, by that railing, drinking and watching what was going on around her. The blond smiled at how beautiful the detective was with the moonlight shining off her silky blonde hair. She wore a simple baby blue sun dress with straps that crossed her smooth tanned back, matching her eyes. A small golden locket and earrings, light make-up and healed sandals added to the attraction. God, the girl took his breath away. Again, his conscious scrutinized on how he was almost twenty years older than she. Slowly he walked over to her in his tight jeans, light green cotton shirt, tan jacket and his favorite boots. A smile curved on his lips before their eyes met. He leaned on the railing lowering his jade green eyes to her raise blue ones.

“Now answer me this. Why are you standing here all alone and looking so beautiful?” Sonny questioned, the flirty smile still on his face.

Julie smiled shyly up at him, “I guess I’m just enjoying the scenery.”

“Well, from here, I’d say the scenery is amazing.” His eyes still held hers letting the shy blonde know that she was the scenery he spoke of.

Her cheeks flushed, “I don’t know quite how to respond to that.”

The ex-cop bent down a little more, his voice softened, “You’re cute when you blush. Did it several times this mornin’.”

“I’d hoped you didn’t notice.” Her soft blue eyes gazed down.

“You’re a woman of few words, I reckon. Why don’t we break the ice?” Crockett took his two fingers and gently slid them under the small chin, raising the young woman’s face up to meet his.

“I guess I am at first. How should we break the ice?” Parish asked innocently.

“By dancin’ of course. It’s a slow one so I think I can handle it. I don’t usually dance, you can ask around, but in this case a slow one won’t hurt.” Sonny slid Julie into his arms.

He led her slowly away from the railing, glasses sitting on a near by table. Half way through the dance his hand caressed her long blonde silk and then the palm of his hand gently rested her head against his chest. He kept caressing her with his one hand as the dance lead into another. Christ my body temperature is souring. I shouldn’t be doing this, but damn it I can’t help it. Sonny’s body and mind fought.

When the few dances were over and faster music came on Sonny stopped. Julie lay there a moment longer before raising her head that met with the tender lips that pressed against hers. The kiss started soft and gentle turning into one that was long and passionate. Electricity sparked through both bodies.

Lips parting, hearts racing, they locked eyes. Sonny’s heart won over his mind as it usually did until he saw the look on Julie’s face.

:”What?” He softly asked.

‘That was so wonderful, like a dream that I’d want to go on forever.” She turned her head down.

“It was the same for me, too. I some how hear a but in your voice.” Sonny stated, knowing there was more to this beautiful line.

“You’re right and here it is…….But I don’t think this is the right place.” She looked back up at him,” don’t get me wrong, please. I’m very attracted to you, really I am and I feel how, um, attracted you are?” She smiled watching him do the blushing this time.

“Sorry, my turn to blush, but you’re right I am very much attracted to you.” Honesty came out in a hoarse whisper. He swallowed hard, embarrassed at how his body gave him away, he took a step back.

“I’d love to see where this goes but I have to tell you I’m not that type to jump into bed with a man I don’t know very well.” The statement came with a small quiver.

Sonny sighed. He knew she was right, “Well so much for me being a Southern gentleman. I’m really sorry. I can be a Southern gentleman, had a lot of practice.” A huge smile crept onto his face.

Julie met the smile, “Sonny, I’d love to get to know that Southern gentleman, but not around a ship of people. “

“I think I’m the one that’s s‘posed ta say that line. I’d like to get to know you too. How about dinner tomorrow night?”

“Yes, I’d like that. I get off at five so how about seven?”

“That would be great. I’ll call you at the office tomorrow, y’know to get directions to your place?”

“That’s fine, I’ll expect the call.” Julie had backed away, putting some more room between them.

“Alright then, tomorrow it is. Right now I guess I’ll go mingle some more since I am the one throwing this shin dig.” Sonny gave a long glance, sighing, trying to break the daze. He had to get away from her and calm himself down. He hadn’t felt this strongly about a woman in some time, “Now you go mingle yourself, don’t go standing alone,” The twinkle of her eyes hit him making his head shake, “if I don’t leave now …….I’ll, um…..I’ll never leave. See ya tomorrow.”

She shook her head yes added with a small laugh as he went off to mingle. Julie’s lips along with her body still tingled. She couldn’t wait until tomorrow night.

Sonny did in fact mingle. Rico had seen him with Julie and tease him, relentlessly. Finally Sonny had enough. He left Rico to go speak to a few more people. Crockett quickly found himself in a lengthy conversation with Joey and Jorge. Suddenly, his radar rose while he was talking to Hardin and Diaz. Why, all of the sudden did that old familiar feeling hit him? Was it just because of where he was and who he was with? No, his gut told him. He became distracted, in the middle of Hardin and Diaz telling him about a bust.

Both of the young detectives noticed that Sonny was no longer listening. His eyes were bright, not from alcohol, but alert. Sonny was observing all the passengers on his boat. The alertness, both Joey and Jorge suddenly recognized, blaring a gaze at on another and then back at Sonny.

“Sonny, what is it?” Diaz asked.

Sonny shook his head honing in on a few people.

Joey and Jorge followed the path where his eyes stopped.

“Uh oh, crashers?” Joey asked, knowing what the answer would be.

Sonny shook his head, he whispered to the partners, “Diaz, quietly go around and let everyone know about the crashers. We’re on and so are they. Tell them they are here to welcome Burnett and Cooper. Let Castillo and Tubbs know first.” He lightly pushed Diaz away and then turned to Joey. “listen pal, it’s time for us to go see these slime balls, as Burnett and his cousin Briggs, looks like about four of them. C’mon.” He pushed Joey’s shoulder with his own and then slowly strolled over to the four men.

The vice crew slowly started surveillance as Diaz told them. Tubbs casually took Gina by the arm and walked closer to the unwanted crashers.

“Act like we’re together and if we’re needed we’ll be close by.” Tubbs informed Gina who nodded.

She put her arms around Rico and felt his arms go around her, “I’m so happy to see you again, I’m glad you and Burnett came down.” Gina said as they started to sway to the music taking turns in watching Crockett, Hardin and the crashers. They were close enough to hear whatever would be said and knew that Gina had been heard.

Crockett came up to the four men who were drinking and eating while they talked. It could be innocent but they couldn’t take any chances he has whispered to Hardin.

Crockett and Hardin had drinks in one hand when they came up to the young men.

“I don’t remember seeing you four on my invite list.” Sonny used as his opening line. “You know these clowns, Joey?”

“No Cous, I don’t. Where’d you boys come in from, like my cousin said you aren’t on the list.” Joey kept up Sonny’s tone, both looking at the men.

The four men stood there calmly, the leader, a Latino man took up the lead.

“My name is Fernando Alterez, my boats a few berths over from yours. We heard your music and didn’t know this was a private party. These are my friends, Juan, Alex and Manny. I know you are Joey Briggs and this here’s your cousin, Burnett I believe I heard someone say?”

“Yeah, that’s right. I’m his cousin, Sonny Burnett.” His green eyes were cold as he spoke.

“So you’re Sonny Burnett? I’ve heard a lot about you from around the marina. We haven’t met your cousin, Joey. But have heard of him too. Don’t know him personal like.” The man spoke to Sonny, holding back the fear of all he had heard about Burnett and his cousin.

Drawing their attention, Joey spoke with warning, “Well now you know me boys and my cousin, here. So until I know you, I’d suggest you step on and go back to your boat.” Joey’s eyes stared at the men before he nodded to the dock, letting the butt of his gun be seen.

“I think what my cousin is sayin’ is this here ain’t your boat, certainly ain’t your party. Come back when Joey here knows you better. You see in my line of work I don’t invite people I don’t know, unless, of course you have a resume to go with a name Joey, me or our partners know. I hope you’re getting our drift. So scram, guys, like my cousin said.” Crockett’s cold eyes narrowed dangerously.

Now they could see the fear in all four men’s faces. “Ok, ok we go, no harm done.” The men slowly put there drinks down.

“Now you’re answering the right way, adios.” Crockett sneered, “and have a good evening.”

The men pushed against each other trying to get off the boat as fast as they could. When they were off, the four walked quickly away. Sonny and Joey smiled at one another as Tubbs, Gina, Castillo and Diaz came over to them.
