You take on tourism seems very similar to mine. I don't really want to go anywhere in particular, just kind of wander around and get some sense.
As far as if you are a student of other players or equals, I should say that probably I effectively taught Cancer how to play Magic, but I always thought of us as equals. It didn't occur to me until years later that I might be the teacher. I think in fact he pointed this out to me, as I always did better at tournaments and such.
As far as playing in tournaments, thinking you are doing badly is about as useful as thinking you are doing well. In one of the last tournaments I played in I squandered my chances thinking I was scooping this kid. I made some hideously stupid plays for fun, and ended up losing the match. (I'm not talking about making mistakes -- we all do that. I'm talking about consciously doing something silly for fun -- bad idea.)
It might be a strange comparison, but when I took the GRE I felt like I was getting schooled. When I accepted my score and then saw the number I had to try hard from disrupting other test takers. I was like...how the fuck did I get that amazing score.
So, it's hard to keep your head under stress, anyway.
