Whats going on with me lately.

My new years was fantastic, Ken and I did both shows at the forks and both shows went off without a hitch. It was a long night and with all the snow Ken was itching to go snowmobiling the next day, so Fatboy came out the next day and ken and kelly took off for some riding.

At about 6 in the evening I see somone climb up my steps, thinking the boys are home I go open the door and kelly is standing there looking pale with our other friend Alana who is on the Elie fire department and was in full turnout gear. "Leiah, you need to get dressed and dog proof your house and we need to go now, There has been an accident, It's Ken." At this point I almost faint and feel like Im going to throw up and start rushing around trying to get ready a few minutes pass and they feel like and eternity of not knowing whether my husband is alive or dead so finally I ask and get the confirmation that he IS alive but that is all I know so it's off to the grace hospital.

Apperantly Ken had been riding along normally in the ditch near Elie when the bottom of his sled suddenly dropped out from under him in an unseen hole that had been covered over by the fresh snow, his spine compressed fracturing his T12 vertibrae and sending a peice into his spinal cord and initially he could neither feel nor move his legs. He also has a fractured pelvis but this seems to be the least of the Doctors worries. When the sleds suspension rebounded it flung him high into the air landing him in the ditch.

911 was called and kelly and passersby tried to make sure he didnt move and covered him with a sleeping bag to try to keep him warm, Alana and her husband and my friend and co-worker Tim were first on the scene with the Elie Fire Department and they waited for the ambulance, and they waited and they waited and they waited. The Cartier fire department never responded so an ambulance had to come from another municipality which took 45 minutes, my husband layed in the snow not being able to feel his legs for 45 minutes.

Once at the grace they knew there wasnt much they could do there for him so they moved him to the Health Science Center where they are better equipped for spinal injuries. The next morning he was in for surgery to remove the bone that was pressing against the spinal cord which was a long operation and terrifying for me, no one tells you anything in hospitals, Finally at 6pm he was moved down to the ward where he has been ever since, I have been there every day until visitors hours are over (Im just about to head down there now)

There hasnt really been any progress, he has a little movement in parts of his legs which is better then in the ditch, and he can feel a constant burning shooting nerve pain in his legs and a numbness like they are asleep. He still has no use of his bowel and bladder function although they have finally given him real food they need to catheterize him every few hours to drain him out. He is in severe amounts of pain and is getting two types of pain drugs, one called Gabipentin (sp?) for nerve pain which takes awhile to build up and hasnt started working yet and Phentinol which they started giving him afer the morphine caused terribly hallucinations and nightmares.

There really isnt any idea how long he will be in there or how long he wont be able to use his legs/bowel/bladder. The doctors never tell you anything because they just dont know the extent of the damage yet. I hope today is a good day.
