As promised, some Old School Cowboyficlove (Screw Jack and Ennis anyway):
If You Will. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Butch/Sundance. I love every single thing about this. I love the way Butch talks, the things Sundance hates, his reticence and grouchy thoughts. I love how clear are are, absolutely in-character in the way that comes from really understanding them, who they are and how completely they're different, how they fit together. I love the slipping-though-the-fingers on-the-run feel of it, which is one of my favorite moods, the harried sorrow of it and the fact that they're trying not to admit it. It's gritty and real, but warm and lit-golden and legendary at the same time - totally Western, in the whole feel of it. The boys are such boys, and the ending is beautiful, a little hope and life, because these guys don't *give* up, and I still don't see them as tragic.
Print the Legend. Also Butch/Sundance, and just as wonderful. Etta is in this one, and just as well-drawn as the men. The mood in this is lighter, crazier, just as dirty-real but less doomed. The settings are lovely, the slow evolution of their friendship and circumstances is wonderfully done, and the banter is frickin' priceless.
Clandestine Sundance/Etta, very lightly implied Butch/Sundance, suspected Butch/Etta. Sundance accuses Etta of having an affair with Butch. This one is ridiculously cute. I'd go so far as to say delightful. Sundance's internal monologue is both hilarious and perfectly in character.
Mutton and Rye. Butch/Sundance, Etta/Sundance, and vague Butch/Etta/Sundance vibes. This one is all subtle-beautiful, domestic and pensive and musing, honest and rich with emotion with a sort of slow, simmering cadence. Just a hint of the fear in the creeping truth of everything they can't get away from. Wonderful.
Now that we're done with that fandom...
The Sandwich Story, Calvin and Hobbes, gen, is a little bit adorable and a lot heartbreaking. Calvin's a troubled kid, and he's getting older, but he's still a long way from growing up.
Five Missions Erin Esurance Failed to complete. Okay, so it's commercial!fic. You should still read it. It's cute and sweet and a little sad, and it makes Tonks Erin more...well, three dimensional. And by the end, I was totally shipping Tonks/Snape Erin/Erik.
One of two separate Altel commercial fics independantly titled
Come and Get Your Love. It's Chad/Verizon Network Guy, and it's awesome in the particular way that Mac/PC shippers and Axis Powers Hetalia fans enjoy: the fine art of telling a story simultaneously about *things* - in this case, the more nebulous, abstract things of phone coverage plans - and *people* who are crafted such that the two blend together. This does that pretty well, and it's a ton of fun besides.
Life in the Subjunctive. Dead Poets Society, five double drabbles, mostly gen, a little Neil/Todd. Every one of these cuts deep and sharp, beautiful worlds, heavy with emotions from the whole human range, spun bright and glinting out of the ether.
No Ill Wind. Fables, Bigby gen, during his stint on the front in WWI. I've been jonesing for WWI Bigby ever since he mentioned he fought and why, and this does not disappoint. The second half is less awesome, but the whole first section, with his men speculating (quietly) about odd Seargeant Wolf is absolutely fantastic - exactly what I wanted. The WWI era-awfulness is harshly rendered, and the eerieness of human soldier boys interacting-with-not-confronting Bigby's supernatural nature is wonderfully done.
Thespians, Aliens, and a Damn, Stupid, Hammer. Galaxy Quest, Alexander/Quellek. This is hysterical in just the same way the movie is, and it's mostly Alexander-centric, which was awesome for me since he's my favorite character. It goes from bitter, snarky melancholy to just the sort of happy ending I wanted him to have.
The Show Must Go On, Also Galaxy Quest, also Alex/Quellec. This one is less about Alex, more sci-fi adventure parodyish, and just as hysterical. Three words: Evil Alternate Universe. In Galaxy Quest. Oh my God, so funny.
...that's all for now. Depending on how the extended celebrations go, I'll probably have more some time tomorrow.
