The confrontation between Mal and Gabriel was pretty much what I expected, other than Gabriel not ending up with a black eye :D It was great that Mal's words about the code he lives by ('you never leave someone behind'), the exact opposite of Gabriel's, at least got to him a little bit.
Of course River was there to kiss Mal, sweet and slow, full on the mouth. What else did he expect, duh! Not hearing a protest from her father was really something; did Mal actually manage to make him think, or was he just opening his mouth like a fish, not able to say anything :D
Can't wait for the last chapter! It has been a great ride!

Mal probably would have found it hilarious to give Gabriel a black eye, but he likely thought it would upset River and Simon too much to be worth it. Plus I don't know if Mal is the sort of guy to hit someone who isn't an immediate threat and who isn't exactly Mal's physical equal...hmm. Oh, who am I kidding, of course he would have. ;-)

Definitely the latter, I think! I almost feel sorry for poor old Gabe, he's been through a lot in one day.
