I think classism is a really important part of the puzzle. I grew up on welfare and ate the govt surplus food. It was not all that healthy and I've tried very hard to expand my food tastes as an adult, however, it is still my first impulse when I am stressed to find the nearest plasticy cheese and make a white bread sandwich. I believed that fruit and veggies were supposed to come out of a can as a child.
I saw an film about classism and they showed a town where the local food pantry couldn't give away the "high class" whole grain bread. It would get moldy before anyone would ever take it. It says a lot about how food is part of the classism. The food on both sides of the divide is viewed as being gross. McDonalds vs Escargot, Buffet vs the tiny fancy servings of cuisine
Hi there! Your journal is awesome, and so is your idea for a project. I'm trying to decide whether I've got the courage to participate. In the meantime, can I add you to my flist?
