In my quest to branch out, do things, and meet people, last night I attended the medieval mystery book discussion and ice cream social. I was the youngest person there....by decades. The ice cream was good though. So this discussion was part of the monthly book club for the Joshua Hyde library. It looked like a small circle of regulars. I was a bit disappointed though in the overall lack of discourse. I think I will give the benefit of the doubt in that a content rich discussion would have been easier if they had narrowed down the subject. Instead we got an overview of the authors and their characters. Now being the nerd and mystery buff that I am, I came with questions like "Why medieval?" and "Why mysteries?" I was too shy to actually speak up, but I'm pretty sure that in my head I've already written a 15 page paper on the topic. And that's before reading more than 1 book on the subject.
This group led me to another thought. Is there a gaping hole in the mystery genre? Are there American history mysteries? (ie, a subgenre of mysteries set during specific periods in American history) I think I should get a master's in Appalachian history and write mysteries in that setting...
