Why do I have so many interests? Why can’t I decide what to do with my life? I have considered the following: poet, novelist, teacher, defense lawyer, activist, painter, hermit, critic, even work within the Church although it would be inconceivable for me to take orders. I don’t know if I can be all of those things. Maybe I can. Maybe I should try. The hard part is that I want a family, and almost none of those professions is necessarily conducive to that working very well. If I ever get married, I would prefer if it didn’t end the way that it did for my parents. Of course, it isn’t as if I ever got to experience not-divorced living. I think they divorced when I was two, maybe not even that. Oh, pardonnez-moi- not divorced. “Had their marriage annulled,” because, you know, otherwise they’d betray their faith.
