The Beacon
Way off in the distance there's the sound like beating drums
Here it comes
The unsuspecting town is surrounded
There's nowhere else to run
It's sweeping through the forests and the rivers and the hills
And anyone who comes too close gets shivers from its chills
One poor soul just happened to catch a glimpse with his naked eye
And all he could do was drop to his knees and shout out to the sky
"Tell me why!"
"Everything was looking up and now it's coming back down
They won't know what to do to turn it around
It's going to tear this place back to the ground
I guess I should have never come to this town."
"Why is no one running? Shouldn't they at least get inside?
Don't they know it's coming? They may still have a chance if they hide."
"It's getting even closer now, can't they hear it scream?
It's like nothing I've ever heard before, not even in a terrible dream."
But no one else could hear it as its shrieking pierced the sky.
And nobody would listen when the poor soul began to cry.
"Tell me why!"
"Everything was looking up, now it's coming back down.
And they don't know what to do to turn it around.
There's nowhere else to go. They're going to drown.
And soon there won't be anything left of this town."
Way off in the distance there's the sound of a hundred crows
There it goes.
And now there stands a town, but no one can be found
No one knows
Empty are the houses and the churches and the stores
And gone are all the families with children doing their chores
And also gone is the one poor soul who caught glimpse with his naked eye
But sometimes when the wind blows you can still hear his wretched cry
"Tell me why!"
"Everything was looking up, and now it came back down
They didn't know what to do and now there's no one around
I guess I never should have come to this town
It was only a matter of time before I was found."
