[Background]

There's a point in every person's life where they long for something out of the ordinary to happen in their everyday lives. A secret organization hell-bent on world domination; Aliens taking over the Earth and holding humans captive; Espers, Time Travelers and Sliders suddenly appearing to battle the evil mastermind. These were the fantasies Kyon had when he was in middle school. But by the time high school rolled around, the boy had to bid good-bye to his childish delusions and went on thinking that from now on, he will be living a pretty mundane and uninteresting school life.

That is... until he met a girl named Haruhi Suzumiya.

Her beauty immediately caught his eye but what made Kyon's jaw drop in bewilderment was her introduction on their first day of class:

'I'm not interested in normal humans! If anyone of you is an alien, a time traveler, an esper, or a slider, please come see me!'

Talk about your first impressions. That little introduction alone had cemented Haruhi's reputation as being a total eccentric and that's putting it lightly. One of Kyon's new buddies, Taniguchi, actually went to the same middle school as Haruhi and starts to relate all the strange events that had happened prior to the series. One event that is interesting to note is that there was an incident where Haruhi supposedly drew really odd symbols on school grounds using field chalk and she even admitted to the deed.

It could be assumed that Taniguchi thinks that Kyon kind of likes Haruhi that way so he also mentions that Haruhi didn't turn down any of the love confessions at all, only to break-up with the guy a 2 weeks later (5 minutes was Haruhi's shortest time in a relationship ever). Kunikida (who went to the same middle school as Kyon) adds that Kyon had a preference for "weird girls". Kyon denied this and told Kunikida and Taniguchi that he wasn't interested in Haruhi. However, the boy observed her from afar, taking note of her odd little quirks like, Haruhi changing her hairstyle depending on the day of the week. But what made her more bizarre was the fact that she had tried out for practically all of the clubs North High had to offer and she didn't join any single one of them.

Maybe it was the curiosity burning inside of him or maybe it was something else entirely he likes her THAT WAY XD but Kyon tried to make small talk with Haruhi, asking her if switching around her hairstyle would attract aliens or something. For some reason, this spurred the longest conversation Haruhi Suzumiya ever had with any of her classmates. But after Kyon expressed his opinion about the numeric pattern he noticed about the hairdos, Haruhi snapped, saying that she didn't asked for his opinion. After a moment of staring at each other in awkward silence, the girl spoke up first, asking if she and Kyon met before (note: this is important but will be touched upon further in the second season). The boy said no and that was the end of their talk.

The next day, Kyon noticed that Haruhi had cut her hair short. He wondered if this was because of what he pointed out before. Ever since then, the two had this routine of talking every time they had time to kill in class. This still holds even after the drawing of new seats (Haruhi still ended up siting behind Kyon). The questions got more personal like Kyon asking why Haruhi kept accepting confessions only to reject them later. It was in one of this talks where Kyon ultimately sealed his fate. He had asked Haruhi if she found any interesting clubs. She, in turn, ranted how boring they were, whining how they were not weird enough to her liking. Kyon went on a tangent, explaining that if people wanted something done, they take the initiative to do so. That's why people invented planes so they could fly and so on and so forth.

More or less, Kyon told her:

If you can't find a club you like, then make your own.

And thus the SOS Brigade was born!

If Kyon thought Haruhi was a little strange before, his perception of her completely changed once they started to put the club together. Haruhi was a textbook definition of a sociopath: taking the Literature Club's room without permission, forcing people (like Mikuru Asahina) to join the club, even resorting to blackmail so that the club room could have it's own computer. He tried to reason with the girl numerous times but Kyon's efforts were always in vain. Haruhi Suzumiya was a force to be reckoned with.

What added to his dismay was when the club's members started to reveal their true identities to Kyon one by one: bookish Yuki Nagato was an alien, upperclassman Mikuru Asahina was a time traveler (who has an older self appearing from time to time), and finally, transfer student Itsuki Koizumi was an esper.

In between of Yuki's technobabble, Mikuru's protests of classified information, and Itsuki's expository ramblings, Kyon was told that Haruhi has the ability to bend reality to her will. The esper goes far to say that Haruhi is a god. An honest-to-goodness god who has a tendency for erratic mood swings. It wouldn't be so bad if said god wasn't be able to create what Itsuki calls a Closed Space. Here, gigantic blue beings called Shinjin wreak havoc in it, making the damage done on the city permanent, even making it possible to erase that part out of existence. This causes a huge headache for espers like Koizumi who uses their powers to keep the Shinjin under control. Lately, more and more Shinjin are created and there were not enough espers to stop them.

So, in order to prevent the end of the world caused by a disgruntled teenage girl, Kyon (albeit reluctantly, in his case) and the members of the SOS Brigade have go along with the outlandish schemes Haruhi comes up with in order for the club gain notoriety (or the world will implode SRSLY). But the girl has a tendency to take things a little too far (e.g. posting Mikuru's sexy maid pictures on the SOS website just to get more hits). She also doesn't care about the people she'll step on just so her plans for the SOS Brigade will be put into motion. While the other members were just passively following Haruhi, it's up to Kyon to drag her back down to reality, even if she kicks and screams while he does so.

As much as he didn't want to admit it, Haruhi did make life more interesting for Kyon. But in varying degrees. Most of the time, Kyon is put into 2 types of situations whenever Haruhi is concerned. He is either:

1) Annoyed/Angry/Dumbfounded at whatever stunt Haruhi's going to pull that particular day, makes sarcastic comments about it, and then tries to put a stop of it.

2) Running/Holding on for dear life because somehow, one of the stunts Haruhi pulls puts his life in danger. This is either caused by the creatures that pop out in the Closed Space she creates, or trying to put the world back into the natural state of things after Haruhi bends reality to her whims.

More mysteries pile up as the series goes along. Did Haruhi really create the world 3 years ago? Was it because of her wish of having fun with aliens, time travlers, espers, and sliders that there are now groups of them residing in Nishinomiya, observing her from a distance? And biggest question of all was, how did Kyon, a normal boy of 16, came to fit in all of this?

The other 3 members of the SOS Brigade did try to explain this query. Yuki Nagato said that Kyon was an anomaly, an "irregular factor near Haruhi" responsible for an abrupt change in the data around the girl. Mikuru Ashina claims that Kyon was a very important person to the girl. But what Itsuki Koizumi said Kyon's role in Haruhi's life was the most mind-boggling of all: Haruhi Suzumiya, god-incarnate, "chose" Kyon and only Kyon.

But for what purpose exactly?

This lead to Kyon questioning what Haruhi does exactly mean to him. Most of the time the two of them fight like something fierce but somehow along the way, a bond of trust was developed between the two them. Itsuki points out from time to time that deep down, Kyon knows Haruhi is capable of not sending their current world into a swirling vortex of oblivion. In turn, Haruhi does rely on Kyon's opinions and advice regarding the Brigade (though she doesn't follow through with them most of the time). A good example of this was when Haruhi wanted to go out and to look for clues for the murder mystery in Remote Island Syndrome episode. She did not ask Itsuki, her yes-man, to go with her. She asked Kyon and the boy obliged without question or protest. This episode also shows that indeed, both parties care for each other very much. They both slipped off a ledge, with Kyon using his body to shield Haruhi from the fall. Haruhi called out to him, frantically trying to rouse him into consciousness.

In another episode, Kyon and Haruhi were the only ones trapped inside a Closed Space within North High's campus. Itsuki was able to contact the boy even though he had a little bit of esper power left. After relaying Mikuru and Yuki's messages, Itsuki says that the reason why is they were the only ones in that specific Closed Space is that Haruhi is bored with the current world and is now planning to destroy it in favoring of making a new one. An ideal world that only had her and Kyon in it. Koizumi even had the guile to joke that it was their job to repopulate the planet like Adam and Eve. Not liking the sound of that one bit, Kyon grabbed Haruhi's hand, dragging her outside of the school. The only way for everything to go back to the natural order of things was for Kyon to figure out what Yuki and Older!Mikuru meant by "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty" (he did, eventually). Probably because of the impending doom dawning upon them, Kyon was came to the conclusion that despite the fact that Haruhi Suzumiya was the source of all of the supernatural things that were happening, Kyon just sees Haruhi more than an annoying classmate. Not someone who broke the time-space continuum, not someone of extrudes a huge amount of data nor is she a god. Haruhi was only Haruhi and nobody else.

And with that, he leans down, saying the she looked so good in a ponytail that it was criminal and kissed her, saving the world from utter destruction and doom.

CANON UPDATE On the day of Tanabata, Mikuru took Kyon back three years into the past. Here, he assisted a young Haruhi write a message on the sports field of her middle school. The message read: I'm here. Taniguchi mentioned in the first episode in the first season that Haruhi got suspended for doing graffiti on school property. Who knew it would be Kyon who had done the deed? A short conversation between the two of ultimately sealed Haruh's decision to go to North High to look for extraordinary beings, leading to the formation of the SOS Brigade (again, something Kyon himself instigated without him meaning to.). Mission accomplish right? Nope! The device that Mikuru used to bring herself and Kyon into the past went missing. (will continue writing this in the morning. ~o~)

[Personality]

Being the only "normal human" in the group, Kyon balances out the craziness that seems to follow the SOS Brigade wherever it goes. His sarcastic and cynical nature contrasts Haruhi's sugar-high cheerfulness and bouts of juvenile delinquency. You can count on him on being the first and possibly the only person to protest vehemently on whatever new screwball idea that pops into her head (he's also the only one who tries to put a stop to Haruhi costuming raping moe blob Mikuru). He always pleads to the other members should not always let Haruhi get her way. But usually, this plea falls on deaf ears because of the fact that Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki are ordered by their various factions to just observe Haruhi, much to Kyon's frustration.

[Specialties/Abilities]

Is snarking an ability? No, seriously? XDD

Out of all the members of the SOS Brigade, Kyon was literally the odd man out. He is the only one in the bunch who can't manipulate data, take down Shinjins with espers powers nor does he have the ability to travel through time. The boy was normal and boring as they come (Itsuki actually did a extensive background check on Kyon coughcoughstalkercoughcough which confirms this claim).

Although it's not exactly an ability, but what makes Kyon an integral part of the SOS Brigade is that he has a huge influence over Haruhi herself. Sure, they argue like nobody's business but Haruhi specifically seeks out Kyon's opinion, his approval in their various misadventures throughout the run of the series. Usually, she doesn't agree on what the boy says which makes it more surprising whenever she does listen to Kyon. A good example of this was during the Day of Sagittarius episode where the SOS Brigade were working together to beat the Computer Club on a video game they developed. Haruhi wanted to stage a full on attack but Kyon advised her to stop charging or they'll lose more of their ships. She actually took this into consideration and pulled the ships back!

Not only to Haruhi but Kyon' influence spreads over the other members as well. Using the Remote Island Syndrome as an example again, Haruhi issues a command to Yuki that she lets no one else to let inside the room they were staying. The alien took this command literally and was not letting Haruhi into the room. Kyon was able to "override" that command and ergo, they were let inside (whether this was an attempt of Yuki kidding around remain up for debate). Itsuki also counts on Kyon to placate Haruhi whenever she's in a bad mood because Kyon is the only one among the SOS Brigade who can do that. Because that they are in the same class, the other members also rely on him on keeping Haruhi's mental health in check.

Long story, short, Kyon is Haruhi's babysitter.

Kyon is also a very observant and intelligent despite his lackluster grades in school. It was him who figured out that the murder on the Remote Island Syndrome was a hoax but Haruhi took full credit of solving the mystery on her own.

[Affection]

Meh. Kyon isn't exactly a touchy-feely guy. He hates it when people (namely Itsuki and sometimes Haruhi) get up into his personal space. Although, he did like it when Mikuru was all pressed up behind his back lolboobies when she was trying to see what was Kyon ogling at on the computer. So it really depends if he likes you or not.

[Fighting]

Being the normal guy in the bunch, Kyon doesn't have any fancy-schamancy powers to defend himself with. He can throw a punch, I guess, and take a punch, too. You'll have to talk to me first if your character wants to fight, injure, and/or kill Kyon.

[Other Facts]

Interestingly enough, even though the series is called "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya", the story is told from Kyon's point of view via his internal monologue. The only way to distinguish from Kyon narrating and actually talking to someone is if that other character answers back.

Kyon also gets stuck doing the menial tasks concerning the SOS Brigade. He was the one who went through the paperwork on how to establish a club and he serves as Haruhi's pack mule and technical crew during their shoot of their very amateurish movie.

Lastly, he has a ponytail fetish 8D.
