100 of My Fandoms
10. Beauty and the Beast

I feel kind of weird including this one. It's not a huge fandom of mine by any means, and actually a pretty recent thing for me at all; the only reason I found myself watching it was for my Fairy Tales and Gender class this past semester. But as I was watching it, I kept finding new things to marvel over how good they were. By the end, I had come to the conclusion that this was a really, really good movie. I didn't start fangirling it as hard as I did Atlantis or HoND, but I can definitely say BatB has secured itself a place in my top 10 Disney movies, and I was all over the fandom for several days afterwards. Like BttF, this is kind of a one-pairing dealie for me, but fortunately the fandom doesn't lack for shipping it, and I was able to locate the perfect fic (elaborated below), so hey, I'm satisfied. :D

Unusually for me, I think I actually did see BatB in my youth, though I don't remember much about it. I specifically remember watching The Little Mermaid and Pocahontas in preschool, but I think we must have seen BatB too. I only know this because the scene of Maurice being carried away from the Beast's castle by the living carriage hit me hard with déjà vu freakout. I'm pretty sure that scared the heck out of me as a kid. But this can't have been when I was older than 5 or so, so my recent viewing was the first time in about 15 years. And a whole lot about it struck me. Most of all I completely loved the Beast, especially the animation on him. All fluid and stuff, man. And we can't forget his voice, which. I just. Robby Benson. So human. *_* He is probably the best character, because of all the stuff we got to see into him, but all the others are pretty darn awesome too. The servants especially. Every scene with them trying to give the Beast advice is funny as hell. Also, the songs! I may or may not have teared up during the title song. Tale as old as time, man. ;_;

I feel like there's more I'm forgetting to say here. I blame not immediately rushing to LJ or my paper journal so I could get out all my squee right away. It would have been cool in particular to make some observations about how it differed from or did cool things with the elements of de Beaumont's original tale, but this was back at the beginning of the semester and I don't remember any of that stuff anymore. D: Still, I hope this suffices as to why I think this movie is so darn cool. Also, the stuff with my OTP, which I shall expand upon shortly. :B

(And to disambiguate my views on the two main points of contention in the fandom: no, I don't think Belle had Stockholm Syndrome (she ran away when he was too much of a jerk to her and only started to like him once he started acting like a civilized person), and yes, I actually do think human!Beast (Adam) is fairly cute. Though imo the people who keep complaining about his appearance are missing the point. Didn't they just spend a whole movie teaching us not to judge people by appearances? :|a)

Hottest girl: Not that there are all that many girls in this movie, but Belle is really pretty with her hair down. Hnnngh. Y u no keep it like that the whole movie belle.

OTP: Cogsworth/Lumière! They are so married omg. THAT KISS. It was really hard to keep from squeeing in a classroom full of people, I can tell you. Luckily, it seems the fandom tends to share this opinion. ♥

Recommended fanworks: That'd have to be A Little Celebration by pooglicorn on disney_kink. As I mentioned in a comment to it, there is nothing quite like watching a movie, coming out of it shipping something, and then going to the kink meme right afterwards and they have exactly what you were hoping for. As for the fic itself, three words: human again sex. :D
And I suppose it would be remiss of me not to include two of my favorite YouTube Poops: Gaston Has Father Issues and Gaston and Frollo Get a Life. c:
