CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Kanaya Maryam
Canon: Homestuck
Original or Alternate Universe: Original Universe
Canon Point: The end of Act Six Intermission One, when the trolls and Dave and Rose have united to travel through the Furthest Ring on their meteor.
Number: 648

Setting: Homestuck
History: Kanaya, like the rest of her species, grew up on the troll homeland of Alternia. Life is bitter and difficult there; members are subject to a culling for various reasons, and rather than being raised by adult members of the race they are raised by large, white monsters known as lusii, who look after their charges in exchange for being looked after in return. This forces young trolls to grow up fending for themselves and becoming adept at a variety of skills to keep them alive. For Kanaya, her position in their soceity's blood-based caste system conferred on her extra responsibilities beyond looking after her lusus and learning to keep herself alive. As a rare, jadeblooded troll, she was charged with helping to carry on the species after the death of her guardian, a Mother Grub who gave up breeding to raise Kanaya instead. In turn, Kanaya would have been expected to raise a new Mother Grub from a Matriorb (which looks like a spiny seed or an egg) collected from inside her body.

Living in isolation out in the desert, Kanaya was free to cultivate her own interests and seems more or less removed from troll society, although still part of it and aware of its conventions, which allowed her to both develop interests uncommon in trolls (such as fashion) as well as interact with them and become an acknowledged meddler. Somehow, she came into some foreknowledge of the game Sgrub that the trolls played, and counseled Aradia against it, knowing that it would be useless, and she ended up joining her other 11 friends in playing a game that would meddle with reality and create a new universe at the cost of sacrificing their own.

Not much is known explicitly about the trolls' session of the game, or many details on what Kanaya did during their time playing. As their session's Hero of Space she was relegated to frog breeding duties, cloning frogs by collecting the paradox imprints of their slime and combining it over and over to try and create the Genesis Frog, who would become the new universe. Unfortunately, this task was never completed properly, as the process was rushed to get to the final boss battle and the frog was missing genes, which led to the universe they created getting cancer. This came back to bite them all in the ass later, when the cancerous universe spawned a dog demon who destroyed their doorway to the new universe and left the trolls fleeing for somewhere to hide, Kanaya along with them.

They settled in a leftover meteor with laboratory facilities, where Kanaya took part in their plan to troll the aliens in their unclaimed universe. This turned out to be the main four human kids of the series. Although initially uncertain and unenthusiastic about taking part in harassing and talking to them, she managed to warm up to Rose and Jade in turn and helped them both by providing answers and advice as best as she could, while worrying about Rose's potential plans and trying to keep her from doing whatever she was going to do that would lead her to disappear into the darkness.

Unfortunately, all was not well on the meteor either. Kanaya had plans to hatch the new Mother Grub deep in the heart of their meteor. But in the depths somebody was coming to a dangerous, nihilistic decision, one that would lead him into dramatic confrontation with Kanaya after murdering his best friend and blinding his rival. Not only did Eridan destroy the Matriorb, with a wand Kanaya created for him as a joke, but he blasted her through the chest, leaving her dead. And free to rise as the undead later, with a thirst for blood, a lightbulb-esque appearance, and the determination to chainsaw him in half. Which she did, with great success.

The current point in canon sees her reunited with the rest of the remaining trolls as well as Rose and Dave, with intentions to journey through the depths of time and space. Her own personal intention, upon discovering that the bodies of her crush Vriska and her friend Sollux had been stolen, is to chase down the culprit responsible- aka. 'clown hunting.'

Personality: Kanaya is a meddler. She'd classify it as helping, damn it, but to everyone else it's fussing and meddling as she sort of casually offers pointed no-nonsense advice and casually identifies the personality flaws of her closest friends. She proves herself insightful enough to notice that Karkat's paranoia and belief in a curse comes from his belief that the universe is constructed to personally fuck with him, and that Vriska would resent and reject her help if she tried to be direct about stopping her, and has no problem pointing that out to people. It's not done maliciously, as Kanaya only seems to feel that she's just trying to help and she has people's best interests at heart. However, Kanaya takes on herself some burdens that nobody asked her to take on and seems to act at times in a way that suggests that she provides her help whether or not it's been asked for, doing things for the greater good regardless of the feelings of the people involved- Tavros' amputation, for one, and clown hunting. But Kanaya is committed to helping, because that's her job, and help she will. It reaches the point where she's sought for help she doesn't want to provide; she's acknowledged to be the cast bicycle when it comes to auspiticing, which requires her to facilitate and mediate between two unstable parties that hate each other to keep their relationship functional and from becoming a romantic hate.

Unlike many of the other trolls, Kanaya is primarily calm, methodical, and deadpan. She speaks in a very carefully enunciated sentences with erudite vocabulary and unlike most of her friends is not prone to cursing, or fits of temper, which leaves her coming across as much more adult than the rest of them. She also seems to be lacking overt murderous tendencies, which makes her the odd one out as trolls are concerned. Most of her interests and habits deviate from the norm of troll society: she likes to go out during the day and decorate things and practices topiary and landscaping. She has an interest in fashion, which leads her to wear lipstick almost all the time and design multiple outfits for herself that cycle at random, so that she ends up fight ogres in an off the shoulder gown. As a jade-blooded troll she holds a unique position in being raised by a Mother Grub who has given up on her breeding duties to act as a parental figure, and as a result is responsible later for helping said Mother Grub. She's a more rational and less emotional person than a lot of her friends, despite her sometimes cutting and later sarcastic remarks, focusing in the majority on being supportive, rational, and realistic. For a troll, she's practically sweet, with her emphasis on doing her job and aiding people. She seems positively ordinary…except that she harbors secret fantasies about being a Rainbow Drinker (the troll version of vampires), from her sordid gothic literature, with a buried bloodlust and a desire for what she perceives as the passion, the romance, and the feast such an existence would bring her. She's more of a romantic than she seems, indulging in romantic fantasies about Rose and her session's imagined triumphs at Sburbs, with a healthy focus on their potential love lives, despite the practicality she puts forward towards others.

Despite her calm and unflappable demeanor, Kanaya does actually possess her own emotional and violent streak. She seems to try to be the more mature troll out of all her friends, but she is hardly as put together as she seems. She's terrible at her own lovelife, which causes her great heartbreak and leads to her inefficiently mediating between parties when her crush Vriska is involved and putting her in tears when she kisses somebody else. While she seems perfectly capable when she's handling other people's problems, it's clear that she doesn't really know how to handle her own. When she approaches, say, Karkat for advice in romance, she beats around the bush with it and she can't quite spit it out and ask for what she needs- his help. Sometimes she doesn't understand situations as well as she thinks she does, given the confusion attempting to troll the Rose Human led to. Her flights of fantasy about Rainbow Drinkers and other such "romantic" and dark lifestyles, as well as her speculation into the human's sessions when she discovered Rose's guide, suggest she's not quite so practical and down to earth as she usually makes herself out to be and secretly maybe longs to be dangerous herself. Her own good intentions end up biting her in the ass a few times- trying to help Vriska leads to Vriska completely failing to see her feelings leading to heartbreak for Kanaya. She's terrible at trolling and seems far too sincere to actually pull it off very well, completely incompetent when she's unenthusiastic about what she's being asked to do (which is probably why she didn't manage to mediate between Tavros and Vriska as well, or manage to be as good as friend and calming partner to the dangerous, violent Vriska as she should have been, since she harbored not-so-secret feelings for her.)

Of course, she is dangerous, like most trolls, just in her own way. While she doesn't seem especially violent compared to others in the cast (who have explicit military ambitions or a vested interest in killing for various reasons), Kanaya has no problem with violence when the situation calls for it. She cuts open her lusus, her Grub-mom without a second thought to remove the Matriorb that would later allow her to hatch a new Mother Grub to continue the species. She expresses no remorse over chainsawing off Tavros' legs and doesn't even seem to be bothered by the fact that she was doing it in the first place. She fantasizes about drinking blood even before she died and came back to life as a Rainbow Drinker. Underneath her calm exterior it's entirely possible that she might be hiding a grim, violent, angry streak, especially post-death. When she returns from the dead, her first act is to chainsaw the troll who killed her in half, punch Vriska in the face and kick another troll in the nuts. Her response to finding Gamzee took the dead bodies of her friends is to immediately begin a clown hunt to track him down, with the not-so-subtle threat of her chainsaw. She drinks her friends' blood as a Rainbow Drinker without asking, although she is at least kind enough to put bandages on them. It's possible that as a vampire Kanaya may be more prone to acting on her violent urges, or giving in to violence without the previous categorization of pragmatic and necessary violence, but given the circumstances which led to her death and reanimation it is also entirely possible that she considers this new violence just as necessary as the previous iterations, even as she seems a bit more inclined to express her irritation more strongly than before. Dying and failing at your central task you were supposed to accomplish for your dead mother would probably make anyone a little edgy.

But vampire Kanaya is still Kanaya- still prone to rambling, still precise and a bit pointed in her speech, calm and practical on the surface, more emotional underneath. Still prone to wanting to help her friends and meddle, even though she seems less certain of herself given her failure with the Matriorb. Still Kanaya- just with a thirst for blood.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Like the rest of her species, it's likely that Kanaya is somewhat stronger and tougher than an ordinary human being.. Her status as a greenblooded troll means she is likely to have a lifespan longer than that of a human, perhaps a couple of centuries or a little longer, although because her rare jade blood sets her apart outside of the hemospectrum, it may be significantly longer. She's also capable of withstanding the blistering Alternian sun, which can blind just from looking at it (this may or may not have had something to do with her ability to rise from the dead later, given the connection between daylight and the undead on Alternia, but it's unclear why this occurred in the first place so no solid conclusions can be drawn). She has no special psychic abilities or exceptional strength for a troll. So far her transformation into a rainbow drinker has not explicitly revealed any new abilities, although it has somewhat effected her physical appearance. It also created or strengthened her existing bloodlust into a need for blood, and the ability to glow like a lightbulb to the point where she even sardonically remarks upon the possibilities of being used as a light source to help people find the toilet. The transformation may also possibly come with an increase in strength, but it is unclear whether or not she could crotch-kick or punch another troll a sizable distance away from her before she became the living undead, or easily chainsaw somebody in half.

As the Sylph of Space, her powers have not been explicitly explored, although they are quite probably similar to Jade's in that she probably has some ability to manipulate space- how large or small a object is, for example, or possibly moving it from one space to another at will. Just what the role of a Sylph involves or what that means for what Kanaya could do with space has not yet been expanded upon. Any conclusions on that front would be purely speculative at the moment, as she has never been shown using her space powers. However, as a Hero of Space she does possess a prodigious knowledge on the ectobiological process of frog breeding, in order to create the new universe of her session by cloning the Genesis Frog. As these have never been seen in canon and it so far does not appear that she uses them extensively, these can easily be limited or removed.

Kanaya's weaknesses are mostly mental. While she sees herself as a helper to others, she tends to assume that she knows what is best needed to help, which is problematic. She also does not handle her own emotional problems very well, and sometimes allows her feelings to get in the way of things that she knows she should be doing, like keeping a closer eye on Vriska or properly keeping her from killing Tavros (neither of which she managed successfully, owing to the complication of her own crush feelings for Vriska). Although she can be biting and perceptive, she's not very good at trolling people or hiding her feelings.

Inventory: 1. Kanaya primarily uses the MAKE-UP KIND strife specious, which means her weapon is actually a tube of lipstick which switches between black and jade green colors. With an added bonus of a transformation into a chainsaw, for all topiary or battle needs, with anything retained in one version carried over into the other. For example, a bloody chainsaw, when switched back to lipstick, is blood-covered lipstick, and transforms back into a bloody chainsaw, presumably until the blood is cleaned away in either form.
2. The spare dresses/outfits previously present in her wardrobifier.
3. Troll Twilight.
Appearance: Ordinary Kanaya! As a Rainbow Drinker her skin becomes luminously white to the point of glowing and her eyes become more yellow, like so.
Age: 13 years old (6 Alternian solar sweeps)

AU Clarification: N/A

SAMPLES
Log Sample: Kanaya had indulged herself from time to time in lurid fantasies of what she would do if she were a Rainbow Drinker before. Often. Much more often than she would ever care to admit to anyone, especially now that she had actually become one. She had visions of herself flitting through the shadows in the day, or at the breaking light of dawn, coming upon young troll maidens who had stayed up a little bit later than they should, where they would swoon into her embrace, and her black lips would brush their long, enticing throats as she sank two needle-sharp fangs deep into the rich bouquet, any color of the rainbow spilling across her lips.

The reality is not like that. The reality, which she handles with practicality and not romance, is that there is not enough blood for her to take from the surviving population of trolls reliably without complications. One thing that has not changed with her transformation is her appetite, which is for the better and also for the worse. She does not need to eat any more than she previously did, but her fantasies had ill-prepared her for the problem of hunting adequate sustenance for her brand new body, and at some point taking a sip from each wrist in turn will become even more problematic than it is now.

Some little part of her that she does not want to think about is hurt by how badly this has gone awry. This is not what she had pictured it to be. But the need to find food is stronger than her crushing disappointment. You cannot dart from shadow to shadow on a ship filled with humans. Not all of them are polite enough not to comment on her strange appearance, and she is not always patient enough not to flash her sharp teeth at their soft fleshy faces, her fingers fondling her lipstick. She has not demonstrated her efficiency with the chainsaw for them yet.

But as the headache of hunger starts to pound between her eyes, she's beginning to think she might need to. The problem is, trying to argue with an entire medical bay full of automated programs is not proving to be easy.

"I think you have missed the point I am trying to make," she says very carefully, wishing she had Sollux to help her to figure out how to tell it to give her blood. Surely it's not allowed to let her starve? "Perhaps intentionally. I need sustenance. I have no other plans beyond consumption. Why is this not sufficient?"

A Common Thing In Human Gardens To Leave Them Untended For Long Spaces Of Time Until They More Resemble A Jungle Than Any Cultivated Fertile Patch
I Can See That No One Has Devoted Any Time To Pomiculture
So I Have Decided That I Will Do It Myself Before The Place Becomes Utterly Unrecoverable
Since I Have Some Skill In This Area
And Also The Necessary Equipment
Or At Least A Chainsaw Which Will Be Sufficient For Now To Remove A Majority Of The Damage And Fix This Mess
It Will No Longer Be An Unproductive Eyesore
Perhaps I Could Even Manage To Provide Some Unique Decoration Assuming I Could Make The Trees Grow In The Correct Shapes Or If The Branches Are Sufficient For Shaping
As Well As Provide More Fresh Fruit
They Seem Similar To Our Trees But I Wouldnt Know Without Research Whether Or Not Possibly Earth Stone Fruits Are Similarly Poisonous To Alternian Ones Until Dried And Juiced
Or If They Undergo A Growth Of Thorny Rubber Like Hide To Protect Themselves Making Preparation Difficult
So Uh
My Point Is It May Take A Little While To Obtain Something Edible But It Will At Least Look Better Within A Perigree
