COOOOOOOOOOOOOON

Apr 26, 2010 03:40

Hi guys. I'm back.

So, I say Anime Detour was pretty fun. It wasn't as awkward as I was expecting, since it was my first con outside the east coast. And after the most recent Otakon, it was a nice break from stress.

But yeah. When Friday rolled around I started getting really excited, and it was really difficult not to be like omgomgomgomgomg all the time. I packed really fast and yeah. Well, I watched cat videos after class to kill time and we were supposed to be leaving at 3, and at that time I found Jacie and was like, hey, where's our ride? Turns out she (Rizu) was an hour away :|a I was like kay. This was a little nerve-wracking at this point because there was an attendance cap for the con, and I needed to be there ASAP so I could get an at-door registration. The other people from our dorm left already and I was like dammit, I could have left with them if this was going to happen. Urrrrgh. But it was okay. Rizu came an hour later and got lost on campus (lol) and we left at around 4:30.

Well turns out Rizu and I got along pretty well (Jacie had been saying that too, so I guess she has a pretty good judge of character) and I wasn't all that anxious on the ride up, like I would have been other wise. We actually managed to get stuck in traffic but it was such a short strip of traffic it didn't even matter. And there was like, this charter bus that was on the shoulder. I know they're allowed but it didn't stop me from being like YOU BASTARD

When we got to the con I jumped out and got in a very short line for at-door reg (which they call walk-in here, like in hair salons haha weird) and still didn't understand why it took like the 3 people in front of me 15 minutes each to register, because I had my form filled out already, presented my ID and money and got my badge in like 2 minutes. There was a sign there that said, people who are not ready will be sent to the back of the line, but I guess that's kind of moot when there's like no line, but whatever.

Long story short: I made the cap. Yay!

After I kind of was like, holy crap. I haven't been to a new con in years, I have no map and I don't know the venue at all, so I need to find everyone else. I tried to find the lobby again but I found myself wandering around aimlessly in the sea of people again. In Normal Clothes, no less (aka feeling awkward). I got a hold of Jacie and they had put the stuff up into the room except like some small things in the car (among which was my camera and my wigs) so I found them and we retrieved our items.

As I was changing into Hei that day I was like, well, last Otakon was a disaster. I think partially because I was so over-programmed with so many costumes and obligations and expectations that it just fell apart. SO THIS TIME, I WILL DO NOTHING.

And I did exactly that!

Jacie and I headed downstairs and just kinda began to walk around the hotel, checking it out and getting a feel for where everything was. We were hanging around when I saw Havoc and Yin!

I'm afraid I scared them, because I kind of jumped out from behind two poles and was like HI CAN I TAKE YOUR PICTURE 8DDD but I dunno. It was ok. I was Hei. :|b Of course the favor was returned.

Since the con consisted of a lot of wandering, I'm not really sure what happened when. But a lot of walking was involved and I'm sure it was uneventful. But eventually Jacie and I found ourselves on this balcony that overlooked the pool area/relax area. Actually the only reason we stopped there because there was an obnoxiously loud panel in that area and so we decided to peek. Lo and behold! It was the Oregon Trail panel. And by panel, it was a Let's Play of it. The guys running it would play with plenty of audience participation. It was funny. I'm sure it would have been funnier if I hadn't been absolutely famished and the cheers were hurting my head. So at regular intervals I would stand out on the balcony and look out over the plaza thingy below.

Snorlax, DO YOU SEE HIM

Of course, being that I am, I looked out specifically for things I knew. Especially with such a great view of a central area (kinda like the top of the escalators overlooking the fountains area at Ota) it was pretty easy to pick out things I knew. And guess who I saw?

MORRIGAN!

I like ran back inside the panel like JACIE JACIE JACIE I SAW MOOORRRIGAAAAN 8DDDD And she was like, you gonna take a picture? And I was like eh... she's on the other side of the room, and downstairs... I dunno. I went back to the balcony and she seemed pretty idle. ...And I took the picture. Ohhh yeah.

Well, Rizu was encountered again and she was like I'm getting food. I checked the time it was freakin like NINE. I hadn't eaten since 12:30. Of course I was hungry. So I ventured with her (Jacie stayed behind) and suddenly

A WILD LLOYD AND ZELOS APPEARED

I was like waaaaoooo they're really good, definitely need a picture. And Rizu was like um. They're going with us and I was like oh lol

Unfortunately I don't really remember their names but they were twins, and were impressed with my Hei, as I was impressed with their Symphonia outfits. And we began discussing DtB and the second season and how lol it was.

It was kinda funny though, because Lloyd's swords were not detachable from the belt. Thus, sitting in a car was rather loltastic.

We headed back to the hotel after we got food and I think I ate in the hotel room a little bit with everyone else. Then I encountered other people I was rooming with: Janella and Jess! They're actually both from my dorm, the ones mentioned earlier. We sat around and chatted and I was like yeah, I don't really feel like turning in yet so I'm gonna wander around a little bit. Janella (and Jess, I think right?) volunteered to tag along, she changed into Olette and we just kinda walked around. I don't really remember and I don't have any pictures, since my camera was erroring and being temperamental all the time. I'm pretty sure it was uneventful. Or maybe it was ridiculously funny and I'm just a terrible memory person.

Anyway went to bed at around 2 that night, after showering etc and woke up the next day at 8. It was awesome because I always want to get up early at cons, so I'll get up at around that time usually to maximize time at the con. And Janella understood this! So we both immediately got up and I changed into Peridot. Holy crap, I was in shock of myself. I actually hadn't tried the entire thing on before the con. I just kinda made everything and made sure they fit and said OKAY IT'S GOOD. I wasn't really anticipating how well everything went together.

The 4 Js at this point (me, Jacie, Janella, Jess) wandered down to the plaza place and were kinda like durr what do we do. Decided this was a good time to get a picture of myself.

Haha, Jess

And it was about 10 at that point and we hadn't eaten. So we headed over to Subway and ate some food.

There was a cute little girl there who was staring in awe at us. It was cuuuuuute. :D

Well, we got back to the hotel and Jacie and Rizu split from the last of us 3, so we just kinda... wandered. A lot of wandering was involved, as was a lot of taking pictures. I don't really remember the specific order of events. Eventually we did head over to Caribou Coffee which was nearby, and I did end up ditching most of my stuff except for my camera and badge so I would have minimum baggage. That was actually really frustrating. Because when we went to go get coffee, it was the only time I didn't bring my camera with me. And guess who was there? Izaya! I asked for a hug instead. It was probably awkward and creepy but whatever. Oh PS, the cosplayer was male. I approve +16.

And yeah, I have to say now. The same guy came up to me three times at different times throughout the day asking me what I was from. Tales of Hearts. No, no matter how many times you as, it's not going to change, trust me. It was getting kind of annoying. luuul. And a surprising number of people took my picture for being a supporting character from an obscure (at least in the US) video game. And you might've guessed it, they were mostly men. There was one girl who took a picture and I just wonder what her motives were. Did she actually know I was from Hearts? Did she just think the outfit was cute? Was she on a mission to photograph all the pink haired people at the con? I have no idea. Doesn't really matter, I guess.

There were signs littered throughout the con written in the Unown alphabet. Awesome? I know. I only took a handful of pictures of them.

"Believe it"

"Back in my day we had cells" (?)

"That's a nice hat you're wearing"

"In the top fucking percentage"

"Does your mother know you're doing that here?"

"Why are you reading this sign? Don't you have better things to do?"

Mini photoshoot did take place for Janella's Faye while Jess ran off somewhere. Good times.

And there was GUUUUUUUUUUUUUY. :D

And a pretty lady :D The weird light is Jess taking a picture the same time as me!

We eventually headed back to the room to rest up a little bit. There was some drama going on (thankfully I didn't know the details, nor did I know the person it involved and nor did I get involved) with this one person so we were locked out of the room for a little bit. There was these Chobits people waiting outside.

And Janella's foot.

After we got inside, it was decided that the elevator lobby on our floor was a good enough area for a Peridot photoshoot so... here is the moment I know most of you have been waiting for.

Beard and mustache xD

Afterwards, we started watching the cosplay contest. You're probably like, your room? Watching the cosplay contest?! How is that possible! Well, they had the incredibly smart idea of broadcasting it on the hotel's TV network so you didn't have to get in line to watch. I was rather reluctant about watching it because I was really expecting those yaoi fangirl-dominated, no one can dance, repetitive skits that I have honestly seen way too many times over, but from the last like 30 minutes we watched it was mostly walk-ons. I was pleased! Walk-ons usually mean a good number of them were quality, and they were! A+, small Minnesota con.

And there was this.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v160/redangelhikaru/?action=view¤t=DSC_0377.flv

I didn't catch it on video, but the MC (who was kinda annoying) said Morr IH gan. Instead of how it's supposed to be said. Then, instead of starting out as dra for Dragon Age, she said dar. Oh we caught that lady.

DARGON AGE

The halftime show was actually pretty entertaining. There were some AMVs (one of which had VESPERIA, and I had a major freak out) and this audience participation video.

Haha and Jess

When it was over we just started watching normal TV and we ordered some Chinese food. After a good long time of relaxing we finally put our costumes back on and headed to the rave. Well, we were out of the con scene for long enough for all the attendees to get drunk, or something. Because everyone's attitude was vastly different from the day.

For example, we walked down to the main patio area and there was this kinda cute Asian guy there and he stopped us. Such a conversation ensued:

Cute Asian Boy: Hey, what are you dressed as?
Me: Oh, Peridot from Tales of Hearts.
CAB: Oh, I see. You're pretty.
Me: ...What?
CAB: You're pretty.
Me: [ AWKWARD LEVELS: 11] Oh uh... thank you?

We also eventually found the consuite, which served food and drinks for free for congoers, just in case someone doesn't have any money or time or whatnot. I thought hey! They have rice! I could totally go for some right now! So I go up to the rice table and there were two people manning it, a guy and some lady. The guy asked me a question but it seemed completely incoherent and I didn't catch a word of it so I was just like "Um. Rice? :D;" Lol it was kind of weird. Then the lady started talking to me.

Lady: Oh my gosh, I love your wig! Where did you get it?
Me: Um... Cosworx.
Lady: Oh, I see. It's a really nice color!
Me: Yeah, I like it 'cos it's not ridiculously obnoxious.
Lady: Yeah, I really want to dye my hair pink, and I would totally love that color.

Then the guy handed me the bowl of rice. It was just under his breath but I am not deaf and I caught what he said.

Guy: ...You're hhhhot.

Yeah, with the hhhhh sound and everything. I just, kinda took my rice and went away. :|a Found out later from Jacie and Janella that there was another person keeping watch out over those two because they were smashed. Go figure. :|a

Well we made it to the rave and it was a lot of fun! Good music, nice visuals. And Snorlax. Snorlax fucking owned that rave. And, they played Basshunter. I approve +20.

Some random guy came up to me and Janella and kinda mimed, you two, me, hug? I mean whatever, so we were like, okay... That was a fucking bear hug. In my head I was like UH UH AWKWARD. Maybe I don't like physical contact/attention that much. I dunno. Whatevs.

Turns out we only made it to like the last 45 minutes or half hour or so. By the time it was over, someone ELSE told me how nice my wig looked. I figured hey, if my wig is this nice, I should just go to a party at Gustavus and wear my wig, and people will be like HEYYYY I LIKE YOUR HAAAIR.

Yeah, came back at around 2:30 and crashed, woke up at 9. Put on Li really fast and it was just a giant getting ready party. We checked out of the hotel and put stuff in cars, and I spotted someone who I thought was Shizuo, they were wearing the bartender outfit and had blond hair, but there was no sunglasses or prop or anything. Plus, he (yes, another male!) was on the phone and I didn't want to bother him. I looked away for two seconds and then I look back, he was gone. Thinking back on it though, I think I remember he had a prop cigarette with him. Eff my life, it probably was him. Oh well.

The lobby.

Aniiiiise.

Jacie and Rizu disappeared so I was with Jess and Janella again (who was Squall from Final Fantasy, I think. idk). We wandered more. And laughed at her because of belts.

We eventually headed to the artist alley, and I bought the only Durarara!! thing from the whole con.

We also headed to the dealer's room and I got a cute little pocchama phone charm :D

Ate at the con suite. Idk, I must've been really hungry because I had a thing of noodles and two bowls of rice. Maybe it was because I was wearing Li? I have no idea.

After a bit of wandering we did one last photoshoot, one for Janella's Squall and one for me. :o

Jess also took a picture at the same time, and hers is definitely scarier (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs312.ash1/27764_1418804475844_1404626957_1132599_735337_n.jpg)

We sat afterwards, did a bit of ending commentary.

We got some coffee at Caribou again, met up with Jacie and Jess and Janella headed back to campus while Jacie and I hunted down Rizu. We ended up being just next to each other on the same room so it was no huge trouble. Aaaaand we headed back.

I dunno, my camera was being really temperamental this weekend and didn't work half the time. I figured it was throwing a tantrum because it lacked a name, unlike all my other electronics. So Jess kindly suggested Zevran. So now, you may all thank Zev for his hard work this weekend.

I noticed though, that my Hei wig seemed to not be as nice as it used to be. It is over a year old, obviously, and it still looks fine, but if you look back on last Katsu's pictures, it definitely seems much nicer. But oh well, it passed.

Speaking of wigs, my Peridot wig slowly un-waved and the little loopy eventually drooped by the end of the day. It's got flash, but here's a good picture Jess took near the beginning of the day on Saturday (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs262.snc3/27764_1418801635773_1404626957_1132551_5407581_n.jpg). Kinda sad it didn't keep but I can always put it back. :D

And dressing as Peridot seemed to drastically changed my appearance, as one of the twins I hung out from Friday did not recognize me when she ran into me on Saturday. I was also walking just behind one of the girls who sits near me in my Japanese lit/culture class, who turned around and showed absolutely no recognition when she saw me. She did however, when I passed her on Sunday. Man, that's what I love about cosplay. It's like a disguise!

Overall, it was a good con. Midwest con culture is a whole lost different than east coast. Maybe it was because it was small, I dunno, but there seemed to be a lot less elitism floating around. I can deal with that. There was also like, no Tales, if you couldn't tell. Ridiculously few people. And while I was cosplaying from Tales, at the end of the con I was like HOLY CRAP I FEEL WEIRD BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TALES THIS CON. Oh, my con buddies, you know who you are, you all have spoiled me and I love it. ♥ It was also a nice change of pace from last Otakon, what with doing nothing and all.

Thus concludes con #21. Holy crap. Shit is craaaaaaazy.

Kay, now it is really ridiculously late and I still have a class to go to tomorrow, bah. I am exhausted. I hope you enjoyed!

Yep. Caaaaan't wait to be Judith. :D
