Peter still couldn't believe that he had been sorted into Gryffindor. He had thought himself more of a Hufflepuff, really. But here he was, in the Gryffindor dormitory. He had three roommates. James Potter, and Sirius Black both seemed like there was no other option besides Gryffindor. Remus Lupin seemed like he could have gone to Ravenclaw, but had a sort of quite strength about him, and he fit right in.

Peter felt like an outcast.

Black and Potter were joking with each other, laughing loudly, while Remus watched on, smiling. The three were going to be great friends, Peter could already tell. But where did that leave him?

Soon, even Potter and Black decided that it was best to go to sleep. After all, they did have class in the morning.

Peter was worried.

The lights were turned off, and the other three first years all climbed into their beds, clearly happy where they were.

Peter lay in his own four poster bed, staring out the window at the crescent moon.

He missed his own bed. He missed his mother, and his father. He missed his little sister.

Peter wanted to go home.

He began to feel sick to his stomach. His hands were shaking. His lower lip began to tremble, as tears filled his eyes.

He wanted to go home.

And Peter knew that he couldn't, which rather made it all the worse. And he didn't want to be the sniveling pansy that had to see the nurse or his head of house the first night, either.

His dorm mates would never let him live that down, he knew.

Nearly smothering his face with his pillow, Peter cried.

He thought that he was quiet. But as one of the lights turned on, and then another, he wished that he had known a silencing charm. Because he had not been as quiet as he had thought.

"Remus!"

"Yeah, Black?"

"I think that other kid is crying. You know, the quiet one."

"If he is, Black, shouldn't we leave him alone?" That was Potter.

Oh, this was so much worse! Peter quietly moaned. He was ruined. His reputation - such as it was - would never recover.

He heard a noise, like someone was getting out of bed, and then rummaging in their trunk. Peter wondered what they could be doing.

He felt more than saw someone sit on his bed.

"Peter? That's your name, right? Are you okay?"

It was Lupin.

"'m fine. Go 'way." He mumbled into his pillow.

"Alright. I just thought you might like some chocolate. I had some before I went to bed, and it made me feel better about being away from home."

Peter paused. Other people were homesick, too? Slowly, he sat up, wiping his eyes and sniffling.

"Really?" He asked hopefully.

Lupin smiled at him. "Yeah, really. Here!" He held out a bar of dark chocolate.

Peter took it, opening the wrapper, and taking a large bite. It was delicious. The chocolate melted in his mouth. And Lupin was right. It did make him feel better.

Potter got out of bed, heading over to sit with Lupin.

"Can I have some? It's just... I was kind of missing my mom and dad, you know?"

Peter nodded eagerly, handing out the chocolate bar. Potter broke off a piece, eating it slowly.

"Yeah, it does help." he said, smiling.

The two of them looked over at Black, who was still in his bed.

"Come on, Sirius? Don't you miss home, too?" Potter called out.

The boy shrugged. "Guess so." he said quietly, before standing up and shuffling over to Peter's bed. He sat, next to Lupin, before holding out a hand for the chocolate bar. Potter handed it to him.

Peter, looking at Black's face closely, could tell that he had been nearly crying himself. But he didn't look sad, like the rest of them were. He looked... relieved.

Peter spoke up. "Black? Are you alright?"

"I'm fine! I'm just glad to be here, alright?" Black said, rather defensively.

"Whoa, calm down, Sirius!" Potter said, apparently suprised at the other boy's vehemence.

"Sorry. I just... I hate my family, okay?" He said, as if he would be immediately attacked for saying such a blasphemous thing.

There was silence for a moment, before Lupin spoke up. "I hate my dad." he whispered.

Peter and Potter exchanged hopeless looks, as the two others bonded over their mutual hatred of their relatives.

Sirius seemed to be doing better now that he knew he wasn't alone.

Remus appeared relieved as well.

James seemed to be glad the awkward moment was over.

And Peter? Peter was never more comfortable than he was in his Hogwarts dorm that night. And he silently vowed that he would always be friends with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Sirius Black, and never to anything to betray them.
