Yesterday I went with Shannon, her boyfriend, and some of his friends to the Highland Park. We did cartwheels and played frisbee, which I totally suck at. The boys can play frisbee while they're riding their bikes, the bastards. But Shannon can hurdle the length and height of a bike, so there. She kept challenging me to races, which was kinda pointless because her legs are about as long as me and she did Track+Field in school, but I raced her anyways. I actually won the first one because she balked at running downhill. She taught me to throw a stickjavelin and I taught her some escrima. And we climbed that awesome tree that's by the goth garden castle. I utterly failed to inchworm along a branch. I'd showed her some method naturalle/parkour stuff before we went so we were mucking about trying to do cool things and not really succeeding, but it was still fun. And I'm pretty sore today so apparently it was a good workout. How do little kids do all that stuff? I don't remember waking up during my childhood and saying "Man, my posterior deltoid sure is sore from climbing those tires". What is their secret? I think we should be studying this. It could revolutionize the athletic recovery industry.
We're going to do something every Saturday I think. On sunny days we'll muck around outside or we'll go to the track and she'll teach me sporty stuff. On rainy days we'll go to the gym and she'll teach me PT and I'll teach her yoga/MA, or we'll go bouldering. Apparently RIT has a $7 rock climbing gym, which is fantastic. And we're still bellydancing of course. We're really well matched to be active sidekicks, because we know different things but we're both willing to try just about anything. Her boyfriend's really active but he's a little too hardcore for her (running up a 10 mile hiking trail when we'd both rather walk, etc) so she's been wanting to do all this stuff but was holding back. Now we can have adventures together! :)
