My personal favorite would be Kurt Vonnegut. Anything by him is peachy, but if you've never read him before, here's a hint that english teachers don't get: you have to start with his lighter stuff before you work your way to his heavier stuff. A couple good places to start are Jailbird, Cats Cradle, and Slapstick. After you're got a hang of his style you can check out stuff like Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse 5.
If you've already read Vonnegut than I've just waste a paragraph. If not, I hope that's helpful.
Some other books I have found interesting are Black Boy, by Richard Write, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neal Hurston, and perhaps On the Road by Jack Kerouac, if you're into the whole beatnik thing.
I've read Cat's Cradle. I liked that a lot. though I couldn't get into Slaughterhouse 5. I'll try On the Road, since I do like that whole beatnik thing. Thanks!

I watched Into the Wild. It was horribly depressing. So naturally, I sort of liked it. It was the white-rich-boy-teen-angst that really bugged me.
