Friday evening I went to my work Xmas party. I wasn't going to go, both because there was FNW that night and because my contract is up in a month. But in the end, my curiosity, as well as peer pressure, got the better of me. What are these people like outside of work? I figured I could make some guesses from the dates they brought.
Virtually everyone brought their spouse or "significant other". There were no surprises. If the men had lined up on one side of the room and the women on the other, I could have matched up all the couples even if I hadn't seen them come in together. The "significant others" provided little additional information about what the people I work with are like.
Since I was there anyway, I did talk with people, including the husbands of two of the women who work there. One of whom thought that the draft should be reinstated, and the the army will always need "cannon fodder", and the other of whom was adamant that the 2004 election was stolen. Perhaps the evening would have been more interesting if they had both been sitting at the same table...
All in all, I wish I'd gone to FNW instead.
