Preshil, why are government schools not like you?

A colleague told me last night that her son completed secondary schooling at Preshil in Kew.

I had heard of Preshil as an experimental school but hadn't looked it up in any detail.

Now I have, and I'm pining. It's wonderful, beautiful, perfect, entirely in line with my own philosophy of learning. Eris would love it immediately for the lack of uniform, and then she would benefit greatly from the resilience part of the curriculum, as well as the de-emphasis of competition and the focus on the individual. Oh, and the beautiful, inspirational campuses, and the sustainability and social justice focuses, and and and ...

Alas for 2 things: the Kew location is not convenient for our intended residences over the next 8 years (Williamstown, Altona, Lara), and the fees are high---$16,000 in year 7, up to over $20,000 for VCE. These fees aren't unreasonable, but I'd have to give up all my other financial goals: no overseas travel, no home purchase. I was planning to go from 0.8 to full-time in the next year or so, but even then my income won't quite be enough to cover it.

Does anyone know of similar high schools that are more convenient for the western suburbs or Geelong, and maybe a bit cheaper?

In the meantime, I am going to meditate on Preshil, and continue to wonder if there are ways that it could be managed.
